Solid addition. Little to no risk on the part of the team. Worst case, he proves incapable of backing up at the NHL level and maybe voids the contract to go back to the KHL.

Yeah, didn't like the roomer of a 2 year deal on an unproven commodity, but for 1 year there is zero risk with it.

Looks like a 2 million a year deal with a 500,000 signing bonus

There is still a decent risk. The Oilers have signed an unproven NHL goaltender to a 2 million dollar contract. The Oilers have plenty of RFA players to sign while adding additional talent (wing and defense).

For 2 million dollars Koskinen needs to play 20-25 games to be worth that dough.

Meh, it's far less damning than the Lucic and Russel deals. I would love to see Chia pull off something like Lucic and a second for Eriksson. Not that Loui's deal isn't an abomination as well, but he would be a far more functional player for our top 6.

I guess I'll wait and see if there's any serious fallout from this. There certainly could be, but I reckon this signals that there's going to be a bigger cap hit being moved out this offseason (Russell or Sekera).

I've suggested it a hundred times and it makes sense in that it makes some sense for both teams: Vancouver get the tougher, "culture-building" winger they seem to want while getting a couple years younger while Edmonton gets the better skater and two-way player that's signed for one less year. He'd be an excellent contributor to a Strome-centered 3rd line.

I'd do a straight up swap but thats it, no way I would add a 2nd rounder.

I’d be shocked if Chia ever traded Lucic or even asked him about waiving to go somewhere.

Russell I think will be bought out next summer.

Could possibly be tradeable as he will make less than his cap hit. But he still gets to submit a 10 team list which likely wouldn’t include cheap teams.

Can the Oilers afford to give up wins while this goalie adjusts to NA and the NHL in general?

Seems like incredibly dumb timing for the Oilers to be taking on a project goalie

Could anyone better been had for less? Montoya and Brossoit certainly weren’t the answer.

Hutton would be my first choice but wouldn't be surprised if St Louis extended him or he becomes a pricey choice in free agency. My issue is the same as many other Chiarelli choices, if you are going to spend 2.5 million on a goaltender it should be one that is proven in the NHL.

And if this isn't the case, allocate it somewhere else. Not for an unproven commodity.

Like acquiring a proven top 6 forward via F/A. Honestly, I wonder who will actually be available though by the time F/A comes about.

If you can find an intermediary team to retain some extra salary, you could potentially market him as a solid option at 4.5mil per year. I imagine you could find a taker or two that he would agree to playing for and doesn't have a lot of worry about the impending expansion draft (Vancouver comes to mind). Something like Lucic with 750k retained by us to a cap floor team who then retains 750k and moves on to hometown Vancouver (who he was close to signing with) for a pick or middling prospect (let's say Gadjovich if you're lucky, likely lesser) and then you send that intermediary team a pick for futures.
