Leafs need an upgrade at defensive minded defencemen. I don't think Karlsson is that upgrade.

I'd agree with this. You already have offensive minded D. You need a more well-rounded solid d-man to play with Rielly on the top pair. Even if you don't land a Doughty, someone like Spurgeon or Ekholm would be an asset.

Exactly! Yesterday, it's Tavares, now Karlsson! There's $20 million right there. Add in Nylander this year and Matthews and Marner in 2 years, possibly another $24 million. Thats more than half the Leafs cap space on 5 players. But hey, I'm sure they can make that work, look at Chicago.
