They couldn't compete with TB talent-wise, that's why they lost.

Honestly, I like what he brings, strictly as a bottom pairing D. Lots of athleticism and skill, mixed with some fixable errors. 5 years at 1M AAV Lovejoy can kick rocks, Santini and Mueller are cusp players that I do not think can compete in the NHL. Green can ride out his contract. Butch and Vats were awesome. Severson has to be better than he was in the playoffs. That was ugly. Bottom line, we need Carlson as well as a #4/5 D man if we want a chance against the big boys.

I'll realize it when getting pushed around like children results in high morale and gives a giant boost to team play. Until then, yes, it does lead to wins when you play with passion and stick up for one another.

"lacking character and grit" is the reason why we have Hall right now. It's the backward old time thinking that you need good "character guys" who "play with a lot of heart" that needs to go.

The reason we lost the series was because our defense is terrible. No amount of heart and grit would have over come that. Lovejoy was playing because he had playoff experience and veteran presence, which ultimately is just intangible nonsense to justify him being bad.

Really, because the one game we did win against Tampa was in large part thanks to a standout performance by Blake Coleman. Seemed like the only game guys stood up and didn't get their balls handed to them.

Hockey isn't a game where you need this but not that. Yes, our defense couldn't hold up skill wise against Tampa. But we also lost because we got pushed all over the rink... When Tampa set up in our end it was a skating party for them. We dished out punishment like nuns dishing out sexual favors. We need more scoring depth and skill but we also have to stop being Stay-Puft Marshmallow soft too.

We are adding him on a 6 year deal and trading Mueller for a 4th round pick.

Stevens had veteran leadership, grit, etc. in spades.

But Stevens could also play defense at a HOF level for more than a decade. He was smart and skilled and finished his career with 900 points while playing as one of the best shutdown Dmen in league history.

Ben Lovejoy is none of those things, he’s a fringe 7th d on most teams.

No one is saying being big, strong and playing with an edge are bad things, but you have to have skill today too.

I’d sign Wayne Simmonds in a heart beat, but I’d pass on signing Jordan Tootoo 2.0 just to get stronger and meaner.
