Good, because they are going to need those guys to be inexpensive NHLers when komarov bozak JVR and either Gardiner or Zaitsev are gone and they sign a Free Agent Dman.
Nylander Zaitsev and a 1st for Seth Jones.
Sign Tavares.
Frustrated Leafs fan fantasy day continues. - Aetherial
But honestly if Tavares is signed, I see the Leafs overpaying for a D. Why the (frank) not.
You get a stacked Forward and D group for one year, then let Gardiner walk because they can't afford him but have Dermott slide up.
Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Kap-Tavares-Marner
Marleau-Kadri-Brown
Reilly-Hamilton
Gardiner-Z
Dermott-Borg
okay, back to the real world where the Leafs are down 2-0
edit: they would even have enough room to trade for Spezza for scraps as the 4th line C |

are you still with your shtick that Nylander is better than Marner??
Marner and Matthews should be only 2 true untradeables on this Leafs team - MaximusAurelius
In my opinion there's 4 or 5 players I'd deem as untradeables. Matthews, Marner, Bill Ny, Rielly, and Dermott. |

Once we sign him, obviously. But I can't count him until that happens. |

Sure, if they get Tavares go out and overpay for a cheaper defender.
Calgary has like one 2nd round pick for the next two years
If you are the Leafs and you sign Tavares do you throw a couple 1sts and Johnsson, something else for Hamilton? Does Calgary take it? - Santo_44
If that trade went through we will have given up Seguin Johnson 2 1st and a 2nd for kessel. |

i think very soon Liljegren will be in that category.
Rest I agree with you - although personally I'd definitely consider giving up Nylander if that means getting a legit young D-man in return (Hanifin, Jones - or can I dream, PK).
Personally I'd add Hyman as well to that list - as strange as that sounds.
for the specific role he's fulfilling, you can't get a better and cheaper option |

Outside of Jones for Johansen, I can’t think of a top forward for Dman trade that was good for the team getting the dman.
JVR for Schenn
Hall for Larson
I guess there’s the Drouin trade, but Tampa got s prospect, not an established NHLer. And it was more of a trade for a French name than anything, so it doesn’t really apply.
Even in the Jones deal, I’d say Nashville got the better end of the bargain.
I think so much had been put on the importance of building from the net out that the market for dmen has swung way too far in favour of the seller.
The saturation of skilled forwards has also dropped their value.
I don’t think there’s a fair trade to be had in the F for D side of things. D for D is probably where you’ll get the best value. That would look like an NHL D+ Pick/prospect for a better D.
Or even trying to fleece a team like Montreal(Nashville and Tampa aren’t complaining) or Edmonton. Edmonton might actually be the one team you could win a F for D trade... because of the combination of Chia’s general incompetence, and his past incompetence stripping the team of a lot of it’s forward talent. |

I agree with Liljegren. Only reason I didn't include him is because he's still a year away.
But the only d-man you mentioned that I'd be cool with trading Bill Ny for would be Jones. |

True. But I expect he'll score more next season.
He seems to take a little bit to get used to a league but once he is used to it, he lights it up. Like his second season in the OHL. I'm hoping he has the same jump in play next season for the Marlies. - GreatGigInTheSky
Bracco has played on the 4th line for the majority of this season. With more minutes and a bigger role he will have a big year next season.

I'd love to have Provorov. I still think he's the best d-man of his draft class. I'd take him over both Werenski and Hanifin. |

wow, I see it completely the opposite.
Jones as a dman on a much weaker team outscored Johansen this year. Nashville didn't get Chiarelli'd on the deal, but Jones is one of, if not THE best young Dman in the league.

What swings the deal in Columbus’ favour is that Jones’ point totals has increased every year. Even back with Nashville. Plus that contract. |

Kapanen-Kadri-Brown
Grundstrom-Nylander-Bracco
Maybe shift the RWs around a bit to get a Swedish trio line. |
