Bob Duff: Two is an odd number The two-year contract extension granted Saturday to Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland seems like a very short window of opportunity to engineer a rebuild of this team.

Does anyone really think the mess that is the current state of the Red Wings will rectify itself in two short years?

With competent management sure.

With management that manages as well as Duff blogs. Absolutely not.

I do not think any GM would rectify this club in any less than 3 years, be it Holland or not. I honestly do not care if Holland is there or not as long as the mantra is play the kids, continue to move out vet contracts and build through the draft.

I, like most knows KH made some terrible deals, but if he identified it and is looking to move out vets for cap space or younger players I think he can win some of the fan base back... the question will be, will be be loyal to that notion... hopefully, yes.

I am much more comfortable with KH staying than I am Blashill, I would hate to lose out on a coach upgrade given some of the names rumoured to be free during the off season. Blashill has no long term future here I do not think.

“Certainly we’ve got to overhaul the defense going forward.”

Holland is just seeing this now? I could have told him that a few years ago, as could most fans when he was busy signing guys to bad long term contracts with NTCs.

He better pray they can find something they haven't found in a decade+ ... a couple of very good defensemen in the draft. This team is going nowhere without it and will suck until they do.

In two years....not likely (unless you can find a sucker willing to take Ericsson, Kronwall, and Dekeyser's contracts). But stockpile those picks and ride out a couple regrettable contracts over that time.

Nah.

There's these things called buyouts.

There is also nothing that says you have to play guys just because you signed them to a contract.

Edit:

Kronwall retires this summer $3M cap recapture penalty

Buyout Ericsson this summer $1,416,667 for 4 years in buyout cap

End result: 2 roster spots on D for Hicketts and Hronek. 2018-19 Cap Savings: $4,583,333

Cap Management is not that hard...
