Vinnie is at a crossroads. He obviously has speed but unless he starts playing smarter he will not be successful. He passes foolishly into coverage so often it is as if there is no thinking going on whatsoever. When his speed creates a shooting opportunity he has to take it and hit the net. Speed in and of itself is a good attribute to have but unless it is used effectively can border on irrelevant.

Same with DuClair.

I’m not yet willing to give up on a 23 year old (before the next season starts) who quite possibly would be a much better player if he’d had some “A” time between Juniors and The Show.

Found this short podcast from Boyle and Burish interesting. Personally think Burish has been a great addition to the commentators' booth. He isn't afraid to call it like it is and he also provides insights that few others, outside of Eddie O, can provide.

http://www.nbcsports.com/...hampionship-window-closed

First Boyle talks to Toews about whether the window is closed, then Burish gives his opinion on which forwards are building blocks, not sure (need to see more to know), or no thanks. He gives brief reasoning for each in the audio.

Saad - not sure
DeBrincat - building block
Schmaltz - building block
Jurco - no thanks
DuClair - no thanks
Hayden - not sure
Anisimov - not sure
Kampf - not sure
Hinostroza - building block

No, they didn't ask him about Toews or Kane.

- pdx2ord

Saad - building block
DuClair - not sure
Hayden - building block in the right role
Hino - not sure

I'm wondering what all the end of year talks are going to be like.

You said Gus and Oesterle look like solid D-Men at a great price? Gotta respectfully disagree. Gus has to improve to be a viable NHL D-Man - needs to add some quick thinking and some aggressiveness to his game in the D end. Oesterle is simply not an NHL D-Man.
- Z3Hawk

I can respect that. I am certain you have watched more of their games than I. Unfortunately their D situation isn't good in terms of free agency. Carlson is a beast but way to much $$, and after that it is guys like John Moore who are certainly not top 4 D. So, unless you trade for some D, Gus and Oesterle are going to be chewing up big minutes. Hopefully they can shore up their defensive shortcomings bc they have shown some offensive upside.

of course...

1. 30 mildo committed to 4 players who are under performing...
2. 6 mildo to a top goalie who's career is in jeopardy
3. 5 dmen who would have difficulty competing for 5-6 spot on playoff teams
4. AHL grade back-up goaltending
5. a forward group comprised of mainly 3rd-4th liners at best
6. no top tier forward talent in the pipeline

I can admit if I am wrong too.

I am intrigued should DeHahn really become available

This player has some injury history. A former #1 like so many NYI defensemen, the biggest question is how steady and is his skating still good, or slipped since he came into the league. Someone with more time on their hands than myself today could look up how he has been used the last couple of years. Leddy and Boychuk first pp unit. One of the better bombs in the league, Pullock beat us and must be on their pp.

However used, Stan will pay extra to bring one of the top dmen possibly available. It is the law of supply and demand and the law of diminishing returns both in play in f/a as well as trade. Common sense says he is not available. With a new soon enough CBA .......common sense just exited out the rear door - maybe - this is Garth Snow who calculates the pre and post Tavarez sign or sign not.

I recall first couple years fresh from junior DeHahn struggled initially in the league. Had some AHL time. I do not know NOW exactly how good and how worthy. But he is more solid, defensively, than Leddy, right!

I was under the impression that Stan Bowman was now the Conductor on the #TankTrain for 18/19 season. The goal is to get a Top 3 Draft pick right? What other explanation is there for signing Gustafson and Rutta??? IF the Hawks can get John Carlson, sure thing. I just don't think any other UFAs will put this team back into contention. Stick with the kids and stock up on 1st round draft picks.

Trade Murphy and Anisimov this offseason. That would free up 9.4M, and with the cap increasing 4-7M this summer, there are lots of UFA secondary scorers that should be reasonably priced. Doubt you can offload Seabrook, but Gustafsson and Oesterle look like solid D-men at a great price.

I get what you are ssying. I yhought the ssme
But i also see a unique position we could be in. Say we have the #3-#5 pick. Do you want to ttade ip one or two picks to het your Toews replacement? As in the catalyst if not exsctly the same exact style as Toews used to be. Draft B Tzchuck. Then you could sign DeHahn and even mive one of the third pair depth guys sttaight up or whatever for a more physical type. You have Forsling and Jokiharju as offensive catalyst in the wings. You need to draft a worthy physical dman if available and worth taking ....point being if such dman not worth lofty selectiin, sure do not want another offensive dman. Although if you did take an offensive dman because your pick was not #3. - #5, you draft a puck carrying mail distributor

A backup goalie is a tricky call:

1. Crow is a great #1 (When he is healthy)
2. A backup to spell a starter for a couple games here and there, is different than a backup needed to be a #1 in case your starter misses major time.
3. We are at the point where Crow can't be relied upon.
4. The current back up situation is a disaster. When you can't count on a goalie win, you cant play the style you are accustomed to.

Tzchuck, Bouchard or Dobson are the guys I'd like them to target if they draft 3-8. Tankathon has the hawks pretty consistently staying at 6-9 with Evan Bouchard as their likely selection. 6'2" 180lbs with 84 points in 64 games for London Knights in the OHL. Safe to say the OHL is the best Junior League in the World, right?

A mlb baseball pitcher and made it to the NHL

A baseball RHP with the Angels and White Sox debut was mid 1980's. Born in Canada. Drafted by the Winnepeg Jets he suited up but never played in one NHL game. Had six seasons ten or more victories, 106 -108 career w-l. Had break out season maybe it was his rookie or second year. Your big clue: gave up home runs to the Griffey senior and junior was it in the same game?

In hockey he was an all star for U of Vermont, finalist one year for Hobey Baker Award. Played with Sherbroole AHL then was suited up but never played one nhl game.

He wad a RW/C and a primarily a starting RHP

I don't see how adding the worst goalie contract in the league helps the Hawks' situation at all. There are enough egregiously overpaid, immovable players on this roster as is...
- Davewn

Well, I see your point, but unless your gonna trade for Henrik Lunqvist, Price is a top flight goalie also which has to be the strongest position moving forward, given this garbage Stan Bowman has assembled,And we have Dog crap in our system as far as goaltending goes, otherwise the next GM will have the 1st pick in the draft next summer. You know that 1more season of this crap, Bowman does not survive.
In Goal you can't have anything less........ Unless they take a flier on Hutchinson or Bernier like I had put out there. My hope is that Crawford comes back all good in Sept. I only put that scenario out as a 1for1 trade ,equal talent, yes the money sucks, but in the event both players could use a change of scenery. That is the angle I took.
