Sheng Peng: Former NHL GM on Vegas "Problem" + Should Knights Go for...Erik Karlsson? I talk to a former NHL GM about the unprecedented decisions George McPhee will be facing with his surprisingly-successful Golden Knights + should Vegas consider trading for...Erik Karlsson?

I think Neal is the biggest bait, possibly also Perron. Other contenders will want experience. Players like Tuch, Karlsson, Theodore, Schmidt, and Marchessault you'd think are going nowhere - should be the future of the franchise.

It's a fascinating "problem" to have. I also don't think MAF is untouchable, as they had solid results with Subban and Dansk. If a team loses a goalie, he could bring the biggest haul come deadline time.

Fantastic blog.
Seriously.

On their "problem"... I personally think it comes down to whether they think they can take out the big dogs come the second season. If you truly believe that you have what it takes to go all the way, perhaps with a few additions, then you absolutely hold onto the guys you have. If you think that playoffs will be a tough ride that they may or may not make it through... then you listen hard to the offers on the table for pending UFA's that are unlikely to resign.
Great problem to have.
I was one of the ones who was skeptical of McPhee's choices. I'll admit that I was wrong. Very wrong apparently.

Too bad they can't trade him back to Pittsburgh... they need him.

No, stand pat and see how far they can take this ride.

While trading for some of these guys would definitely get you a couple more first round picks for the future. This team is already sitting pretty well for the future with their first draft and the picks they have this upcoming year and the year after that. If they really like a player they can trade up with massive amounts of picks they have.

I could honestly see it happening. Melnyk is a tightwad and he will not want to pony up the 12 plus million for 7 or 8 years that it will take to keep Karlsson. Vegas on the other hand would see it as an investment.

I'm a little disappointed in what this 'former' GM said, No commitment to anything asked about what could happen. No opinion, no 'if that were me' responses.

Also, it's a new franchise & his comment about the fans, if the new organisation doesn't at least take 'some' things on board from the fan base, the Knights may struggle through the followings years. No fans, no chance!

I'm starting to think they go for it unless they get injuries.

No way they should go anywhere near Karlsson. Never!

It's Vegas. If they're sitting here in the standings you go all in. You never know when your year is coming. You take the chance this is it. Period.

Re-sign guys (whoever they are) if you want to keep them, trade the guys that you don't intend to re-sign or can't

It's called Asset Management

This way you don't overpay guys in the offseason and you don't lose guys for nothing

Agreed, they're fun to watch, don't fix what isn't broken! They are writing a fantastic history for themselves, ride that f'n pony into the sunset!

I get where you're coming from, but goaltending being as volatile as it is...who's to say that Subban keeps up his level of play if he's anointed starter...it's hard to think about parting with Flower unless you get a stupid offer, which is unlikely.

Fantastic blog.
Seriously.

Thanks! Look for another one in the coming days...a good chat with Bobby Clarke, Florida's first GM.

That's how you know it's a real GM, even anonymously, he wouldn't say much
I tried.

As for his comment about disregarding fanbase, I think he's strictly talking about personnel decisions, which I get. Your focus is on winning, not winning over fans.

The potential cost of a Karlsson and the sure havoc it would wreak on your farm system is too scary, honestly. But it's crazy to me that it's even up for the discussion. Credit to this team.

I probably should have brrn more specific; what I meant by all in is keep your soon to be expiring UFAs and see what happens in the spring. I don't think they should mess with the team chemistry at all. Go with what you've got and try to re sign these guys if they do well in a playoff run.

Under no circumstances get Karlsson. He's going to fetch far too much and I see the team that goes for him regretting it soon after.

Reading the idiotic non committal answers it's no wonder this guy is a "former GM"

Reminds me of George Carlin's Hippy Dippy Weatherman. "We're expecting scattered lightness around dawn.."
