Ideally, you extend him for just 2 years. That gets you one year beyond Greiss's contract. I suppose a lot depends on what, if anything, is transpiring between Lou and Sorokin. If it's looking bad for ever seeing Sorokin in the NHL, maybe you give Lehner a 3rd year? He's only 27, I think.
- JohnScammo

I mean...you look at what Bobrovsky is going to get as a free agent. That scares the crap out of me. If Lehner continues to put up numbers like he has all season long...I have zero problem with him getting a decent length contract if it keeps the cap hit lower. 3 years sounds pretty ideal to me considering Greiss will become a UFA pretty soon. Honestly, with Lehner only being 27 years old...I wouldn't be all that upset if they had to give him 4 years to keep him away from hitting the FA market. 4 x 3.75m? 3 x 4 million?

I agree UIF. I would not be comfortable especially letting Lee go unsigned after the deadline. Lou needs to wraps some of these players up. Have to think Lou would want to re-sign Robin as well.
- ses111

I can't see why Lee wouldn't get done. My best guess would be the two sides agree to let a good part of the season play out to see if you're paying for a 40g scorer or a 25g scorer.

Nelson might be a little trickier. A player with his numbers playing center could probably get a few teams to really overpay in free agency, so if he stays, it'll be for 2C money, and you have to think about if he's definitely the 2C you want long term.

Also, Lee's spoken publicly a bit about loyalty. I'm not sure where Nelson stands on all that. He's the one I feel like is the bigger flight risk, and also the one where it might be harder to settle on a number.

3 year deal for Robin would be nice.

I still see Nelson best as a 3C and he might be tough to get signed. Lee I have to think will get done.

Yeah, I could live with those numbers for Lehner. 4 years is a bit of a risk for a goalie, because the position is full of head cases, and Lehner is no exception. On the other hand, Lehner is playing great. He leads NHL goalies in goals against average AND save percentage. So your numbers are not out of line....

I don't think three years would be terrible, as long as he's not getting elite starter money. If it falls apart for him a bit over that time and you have an overpaid backup who can still put some solid starts together, I can live with that.

I hold out no hope for Sorokin. Even if he agrees to come over, there's no guarantee how his game will be in the NHL, and who knows if he bolts back over if it starts out rough for him. I'm kind of over dealing with players under KHL contracts. Maybe he comes over and changes my mind, but it seems like you do a lot of waiting for these players, they're still projects when they finally come over, and their commitment to putting the time in to learn the game here is, well, not 100%.

Yeah Lehrer should get a contract but he is a bit of a wild card and I assume his contract will reflect that. Who knows if he can stay sober and hold his game together? I’m all for signing him but while avoiding anything long term and to significant.

I agree on Sorokin. I do not want to give a big deal to Bob. I think re-signing Robin is a must unless he is looking for a huge money and year deal.

I'm hoping Lehner likes it here and wants to stay because with the numbers he's putting up his agent is seeing $$$$ and there are a handful of teams looking for starting goalies and not a ton of options.
Have to think with Lou giving him a chance when he was at rock bottom He will give the Islanders a fair shot.

I think(hope) that would be the case. We’ll find out what kind of guy Lehner is in the next few months. Lou will probably try to lock him up soon I would think.

Haha I was just messin with ya

I didn't mean it. Hug it out?

Edit: BTW...how has Darnell Nurse been doing? I remember thinking he had massive potential when you guys drafted him. I believe you took him 8th overall a few years back? I kind of stopped paying attention to him. Has he been any good as of late?

I stopped holding my breath for KHL players a long time ago. Way too unpredictable for all the reasons you detail. I'm so glad Lou didn't sign Kovalchuk. LA is stuck with a $6.25MM cap hit for this and two more seasons. The guy has 8 goals and is -16.

I'm not sure what to think about Nelson. I really have no complaints about how he's filled the 2C role this season. Hell, lately his line's probably been the most consistent. You look at some of the bigger names available and, yeah, it'd be nice to bring one of them in and have a mega 1-2 punch down the middle the way teams like Pitt and Toronto have, but (a) can you even land any of those players? and (b) would the money it would take to bring in a bigger name at C be better spent at another position if Nelson agrees to do what he's been doing this season for normal 2C money?

Money makes people forget unfortunately. However with the demons that Robin has fought and while here staying clean and turning his life around you have to think that it's good for him to stay here. Moving to another City / Team he might find himself tempted to to the dark side.

I would think once the PO picture is clearer Lou will be finalizing contracts with the FA's they see as being long term pieces of the team.

Lee, Nelson and Lehner I think get done. Eberly could stay if he isn't looking for a totally unrealistic deal. My opinion of course.

Not that I want anything to do with the guy...but I feel like Kovy is the kind of guy that...when your team sucks...He just stops giving a poop. If he were to get traded to a contending team and he's placed in the top 6... he's going to "suddenly emerge as an elite sniper" again.
