My point was mainly that having a ton of good prospects gives you the flexibility to fill holes in the roster with really talented young guys that cost next-to-nothing, relatively speaking.

Every good team that has won a Cup or competed for in recent years has had young guys stepping up all season and in the playoffs to help get them there. It also allows teams to go out and land one big fish to try and get them over the hump.

Understood. You need to have young players ready to step in and contribute. This was the huge failure of Garth. In a Cap world, you need to rely on developing your own talent.

I am concerned about that flight hitting turbulence in the midwest.

The picks were great whether he stays or goes. I know everyone wanted to trade them for immediate help but if there was no immediate help worth trading them for....then there was no immediate help worth trading them for. You and I don't know, and probably never will, whether there was or wasn't an appropriate deal to use those picks in.

Alternate way of looking at things: John Tavares now knows that it's very likely the Islanders will be able to keep a steady influx of highly talented young players who are on ELC's rolling in. Which means they can pay him and still afford to be competitive. Look at the Lightning, their young guys just come up and kill it year after year. They aren't typically out looking to make the big splash in UFA or make massive trades.

- eichiefs9

There's always different ways of looking at it but if you're hedging your bet by keeping those picks you may lose in the end. I'm honestly not sure which was the best route but I do believe that tavares wants(ed) to see immediate improvement as far as our team is concerned. For someone who has always said all he wants to do is win now we honestly didn't show him that. Of course lou promised him immediate help if he comes back but the question is will that be enough. Like everything else this is all speculative who knows maybe he wants to leave because he hates long island? Maybe he's happy about the draft? Nobody really knows...

Yeah, for a guy known for hoarding his draft picks, it seems like there was a dearth of serious talent coming up through the ranks. Obviously, there were a few exceptions like Barzal.

[quote=ses111]There really did not seem to be a trade for a star goalie and the star goalies all have age and salary against them like Hank and Price. Isles are going to have to get creative in terms of a goalie. Same thing in terms of dman. Plenty of teams can win without big name dmen. You make a good point about Tampa. Really hard to make a big splash in FA as you will not see the big impact players get to FA. SmartMost likely not but who knows?

Yep! Garth talked a big game about developing the prospects and building the team around them and then he gives the team Cappy for years.

Well, once again I present to you: "Guy from Reddit that claims his roommate works for the Islanders and absolutely nailed the Trotz announcement, down to the day"

Take it for what you will, but it's certainly not bad news.

I wasn't suggesting they were making the picks to keep Tavares, but he had a 77pg binder of information on all the teams he was meeting with. He's doing his organizational-homework and I'm sure he looks at what their prospect pools look like so he has an idea of how competitive those team may be down the line.

I'm just saying that he may not look at this year's draft and go "I can't believe they didn't trade those picks, idiots". It may be a good thing in his eyes, that's all. It may not be, also.

Huge if true. I don't think JT has made his decision yet but who knows.

Wish I knew someone in the Islander Organization, I have to rely on my nuggets when I'm lucky enough to get an Islander as an uber fare, or someone on here has dinner at a players house.

One thing is for sure, if he does sign with the isles, he believes they have a chance to compete for Lord Stanley. Thats exciting. If he decides there's a better spot for him (which i dont), then its truly the end of the Snow era, and the isles can take solice in the fact that they just had a team changing draft for the future.

Whatever happens, the important thing is that Cpt will either complain that he left or complain that they paid him too much. That's what's really important here.
