After reading Larry Brooks article about Ranger's prospects and the expansion draft he seems to state that if they sign some of these young prospects to their entry level deals next summer it would make them exempt from the espansion draft. Does that mean Bode and other guys we signed this year was a huge oops?

I'm watching livestream of ESD board of directors meeting in which they are expected to authorize the release of the draft environmental impact statement regarding the Islanders' Belmont project.

Conoscenti addresses how the project has changed since a year ago when the Isles group won development rights. Changes include dropping size of hotel, moving retail to south side of project, etc.

Conoscenti confirms what we reported today, that the LIRR is providing only two trains for arena events. He says two trains before events and two trains after events.

If they have trains coming from the East going there it will be fine. If all these trains go to Jamaica it will be Brooklyn part 2

There will only be two trains incoming and outgoing. I am sure they will go to Jamaica and everyone will have to transfer to their east bound train. It will be a poopshow. The train probably won't get into Jamaica until after 10pm. That means all the east bound trains will be operating on a local schedule. Depending on where you live you could leave the arena at 9:30 and not pull into your station until well after 11:00. I wouldn't even consider it.

Sounds like it's going to be Jamaica to start, but the Islanders are kicking in funds to fix the rail situation eventually

I thought everyone wanted to drive to the games and that was the problem with Barclay's?

There will hopefully be opportunity for both, which would ideally lessen the impact of both types. Trains would, in a perfect world, be less crowded...as would the roads.

The attorney Norm Siegel, who is representing the community folks who are strongly against the project, is speaking now and is all fired up

Now up, Norman Siegel, attorney for group of residents who oppose arena. Says ESD is "deficient" thus far in the SEQRA process, specifically in the transportation issue and the study of the arena impact on communities. (Deficient, mind you, is an important word in SEQRA world.)

Siegel says "there is legal consequences" to their response to comments raised during the start of the environmental study. Says ESD mentioned they planned to develop a plan for LIRR station & also say it's "outside the scope."
"If this is true, you have a huge problem," he says.

Siegel strongly attacking ESD for the lack of details provided by ESD thus far about the Belmont project impact. "You need to document in detail the direct and indirect effect" the project will have on communities. "At this point... sir, you've got a huge problem."

Unrelated to the arena, USA Hockey released the WJC preliminary rosters yesterday. Wahlstrom and Cockerill were named to it but Bode Wilde was a massive, massive snub. Not really sure what the thinking there was, but that's hilarious.

Watch him get injured again in Bridge when he should have been in the NHL already.

Last night was the third game he's missed. Nothing serious, apparently. This was from Staple a few days ago.

Fans are going to have to suck it up. They did not like Barclay's so they need to show up whether that driving or taking the train. No excuses.

Yeah I'm not about to start whining. If I don't feel like taking the train I will pull up my big boy pants and just not drink like a savage at the games.

For some reason the LIRR schedule won't load, but I'm willing to bet that the travel time from Jamaica to Belmont is, at least, somewhat shorter than it is to Atlantic Ave...if not significantly shorter.

There's not much they can do unless they add more tracks out of Belmont which will never happen. In order to go east from Belmont, the train will have to go west to Jamaica to switch tracks.

I guess they could have a train go to Mineola or Hicksville (or some other main station) without stopping. It will still have to go west before going east. It still won't be a viable option for 90% of the people.

Or get someone else to drive.

I don't think it's a big deal, but I don't see why they're trying to push the issue. The LIRR is designed to get people into and out of Manhattan - nothing else. It will never be a viable option to commute intra-Island.

Maybe I'm reading that article wrong, but the way I'm understanding that is that they're going to be "adding" to the LIRR service.

The line was "Previously the LIRR has said only that it was committed to expanding service to the Belmont station" and then "...the ESD said the Islanders' group will contribute funding for the added rail service"

If the "previous" plan was just to "expand service to the Belmont station" it sounds like they plan on eventually having a solution that requires a pretty major project.

I plan on at least browsing the EIS later, so hopefully there's more info in there.

It doesn't work like that.. people have lives, families, and other responsibilities. The reason Barclays did not work is of course the place sux but the experience was horrible too. If I have to go home to get my kids, take the train to jamaica and transfer to get to and from the game it's a sht show. I am not sure how many of you guys ride the train every day but it's not fken fun. LIRR is a sht show on a good day. Having 2 little kids holding your hand while you are freezing your ass off waiting for a train that is late to take you back east is not ideal.

If they want this to work... they trains have to come in and go out directly .

Yes, Driving will be a much better option here than Brooklyn, but if I can hop on a train and be there in 30 minutes without standing on a packed platform in the aRse end of Queens it would be much better.

I had season tickets to the Isles for over 10 years at Nassau. They were horrific for many of those years and I was sitting there with about 2000 people. No one gets to tell me I am "not a big enough fan" if I don't go to where they are playing at this point. It's up to the team to make the experience somewhat pleasurable.

It's not up to the team to have thought to update/upgrade the existing infrastructure 20 years ago in some sort of psychic-anticipation of an eventual move to Belmont.

I'm not gonna tell you how you should or shouldn't feel but the reality is that they pulled a rabbit out of their ass and found a plot of land with the ability to be developed into a brand-new, state-of-the-art arena and they managed to get the state on board to help push it through. The travel accommodations are going to be what they're going to be. Every Islander fan got what they wanted, a new permanent arena on Long Island. I'm not going to complain about travel time or having to be on a platform with a bunch of other people. It already sounds like they have every intention, eventual litigation notwithstanding, of doing everything they can to upgrade the infrastructure to accommodate large crowds on gamedays.

I live out in Great River (that's the literal-east-end of the Southern State, for those asking themselves "where and what the (frank) is Great River") and, frankly, it takes me forever to take the train to anywhere and a pretty long drive as well. I'm just happy they'll have a high-end facility to play in.

This is the point. Fans wanted a state of the art area back on Long Island and they have that. You are not going to have am arena within 10 minutes of most Isles fans. There will be a little effort into getting to these games. It should work out much better than Barclay's.
