Really no fair way to make a call on MDC yet. Lou and Barry obviously are winners but I'm concerned with Toews not getting a look and how MDC was put on the 4th line. I think a young player will really need to blow their socks off to get a good look.

4 years is plenty fair....he’s not going to be a top 6 forward.

4 should be more than fair but it's different when you have people like Garth, Cappy, and Doug running things. This team had no development plan at all or a very bad one.

I think we can safely assume he is a bust. Here is that draft class. Only 1 player in the first round has played less NHL games than MDC. He was the 5th pick in that draft. Look at the production of guys above and below that pick. It was clearly a terrible pick.

MDC will never be a top 6. If we let that go he could end up a serviceable bottom 6 guy. He is big and his skating is getting better every year. They are trying to see if they can turn him into a good 2 way guy. That is why he got the call instead of the guys we want to see here (Bellows, Ho Sang, etc.).
- niteislander

MDC being a top 6 player could be a stretch at this point. Stranger things have happened. I still think playing MDC on this 4th line is not going to show you much. What can MDC do with Gionta and Johnston?

If fans had no clue MDC was a 5th overall draft pick i think they’d look at him a bit differently. He’s had 4 years now to get up to NHL speed. What’s the hold up?
- kindlyrick

Garth Snow? I really don't know, KR. I haven't seen very much of him. But he obviously has been unimpressive since being drafted.

Agreed and for me it’s reason enough to move on. Much like Strome, fans assume because he’s a 5th overall he’s gonna be a top 6 guy. For whatever the reason he’s not, and to waste time waiting makes no sense. I agree that the development was horrific, but 4 years later and his foot speed is still suspect. That’s not on the coaches.

Guys have to be put in a position to succeed. Some standout on their own (Crosby, Ovi, JT, etc.), most need the right system and linemates to be successful. Maybe MDC ends up being a career AHL player. Maybe 3rd or 4th liner. Maybe in year 6 or 7 he pulls a Bertuzzi and becomes a very nice power forward. Who knows. If they see something in him and want to develop that, fine. If they trade him and all they can get is a used ice cream cone, fine. MDC has only been under this regime for a few months now.

Nobody really has seen much of him because he’s not all that good. It’s not a coincidence that Snow had a multitude of bad 5th overall picks. Clearly his knack for talent was simply picking the best pt performer at that pick.

Not so sure I agree, KR. He's been tearing it up in BPT this season. What did he do prior?

Not sure where the bertuzzi analogy came in here but bert came in the league a true power forward. MDC is a forward with no power. Ha

Exactly hockeyman! Nobody is saying sit Lee and Bailey for MDC but do not call MDC a bust because he could not do anything with Gionta and Johnston. This is beyond MDC and it's about not keeping playing like Toews buried in the minors or just playing young players on the 4th line.

With all due respect, we don’t know why he was on that line or even called up. To me, they’re rewarding him for his play in the A. He’s not able to play top 6 minutes and he’s prob extremely fragile so they eased him into the lineup. Most of these players have skill but clearly they’re trying to gain his confidence and play a simple smart game. Hence he’s playing with vet journeymen. They’re not looking for him to come up and light the lamp. They wanna get him positionally sound defensively responsible now. I get the 4th line minutes for him.

Because Bert is a big body as well. Took him time to elevate his game. Not to mention he didn't want to be a power forward when he first came up. Once he finally embraced it and his game came around, he became the Bert we all know. But it took him 6 NHL seasons to break 40 points. Don't get me wrong, I don't think MDC will be Bert or even a good NHL player. You just never know. A lot has to do with the individual drive and heart.

That looked like house league where a guy who plays the top division is playing down in the lower division. That was embarrassing to any defensemen.

If playing on the 4th line with Gionta and Johnston is a reward I'll pass. MDC is a shooter so put him with players that can pass. Isles have a few of these players and not many shooters.

That reminded of a few years. The Coyotes called up Perlini in early November. He was doing ok, close to a point a game. They sent him back down in late December for their week off. He had a hat trick by the middle of the 2nd period and was just toying with the other team.

Bertuzzi came into the league with fire and while he may not have wanted to be “that guy” he had 150+ pims in 3 outta 4 seasons in Guelph as opposed to MDC having an average of 25 for Oshawa. Bert was in fact a true power forward. MDC was drafted high for his pt production only. Oh and Garth thought he was a high character guy 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well then lucky for us fans you’re not in charge. Ha. MDC was brought up as a reward for his play in the minors. I’d rather him learn Trotz’ system on the 4th line playing 5 min a night and be invisible there, rather than 18-20 min in the top 6 and be invisible there.
