Well either sign him for what the market bares or lose him for nothing. If your talking about a Cap hit of 10 to 12 for your franchise player what’s the difference if it’s 10 or 12. If you want JT to stay then your gonna have to pay him or someone else will.
- nyisles7

He will be a 2c in a few years behind barzal. Look they need him for many reasons like respectability and you cant replace him with what's out there. They said money isnt an object and I think they will match any offer hes given so I still think hes signing, i just dont think hes worth 12 million

Tavares to Leafs "second most likely" Hearing JT and the Leafs is the "second most likely destination" and should things go south with the Isles Toronto's offer will be hard to top. "We will know alot my tomorrow.". Eklund

Who gives a shat if he’s a 2c in 5 or 4 years? The guy is the face of the franchise. He’s a Franchise FA, and your gonna let him walk for 12 but sign him at 11?
In my mind it’s penny wise and pound foolish. Islanders would be real weak up the middle. But hey everyone is intitled to their opinion even if it’s dumb

Ek reads what we read and then writes a source told me so blog. Reminds me of our new kinder and gentler Blogger BDG

Seriously the Leafs could offer JT 15 million for 1 year to join The Leafs with a deal in principle for 8, 9, 10 million for another 8 after that for a total 9 year deal. Not on paper because it would be circumventing the Cap but it’s possible.
There hasn’t been a Talent like JT as a FA in years and if he gets there the market price could be crazy.

What's a couple of million bucks between friends? The question is, where do you draw the line? You're willing to pay him $12 MM. Why not $13 MM? Or then $14 MM?

Stamkos signed for $8.5 MM. Even if you factor in New York State's income taxes, that's the equivalent of at most, roughly $9.5 MM (actually a little less). How much better than Stamkos are you saying JT is?

It doesn’t matter what Stamkos signed for with Tampa. Or what OV signed for with The Caps. Different Cap, different players and also different teams and what each player means to their team.
I agree you have to say hey we want to sign him but we can’t hurt the team by signing him to a stupid number. For me I sign him at 12 and that’s pretty close to saying uncle. He’s getting 10 to 12. Just depends on who and where.
You lose him I think it sets the club back 5 years. Not to mention this team needs to keep its core in tact, add to it and finally make a run instead of hitting reset every 3 years. Owners want that new stadium full and the fans aren’t coming if the team isn’t winning.

As far as Stamkos signing with Tampa, his parents bought a house in Tampa the summer before, The Bolts offered him 8.5, he did exactly what JT is going to do and check what’s out there and decided Tampa is where he wanted to stay.

Toews was the highest paid player or close at one point. He isn’t anymore.
The Blackhawks however signed him to that number because they thought that’s what he was worth to them.
Worked our pretty well. No regrets when your team wins a couple Stanley Cups.
Austin Matthews is gonna get a new contract soon. The Cap may go up to 84 million and he signs for 15, who knows? Fact is salaries are going up. Caps going up and FAS are gonna get paid especially if you let them go out there and test the market.

How did you arrive at $12MM? If you can't consider other players like Stamkos and Ovi, what did you base your number on?

12 to 15% of the Cap. McDavid signed for 16.5 % I believe.

OVs contract is for 13 years and when signed was ~19%.

How did you arrive at 11 and that’s it?

Sounds reasonable. Your at 10.4 per so anything over is a bad deal then for you and you don’t do it and let him walk for nothing?

You're mixing me up with Upstate. I arrived at no number. I was questioning your earlier comment that you cannot compare players.

BTW, 15% of the cap is $11.925 MM. So you're advocating paying him less than $12 MM???? You cheapskate!

If they don’t sign him, it’s probably better to rebuild than try to slap something together to fill that hole in additional to the other existing ones. With Tavares, they can maybe do enough in one or two offseasons to make something dangerous. Without him, there’s a heck of a lot more to do and you’re counting on some vets with spotty records to really step up, contribute, and lay it all on the line every night. In that case, I think it’s better to just sell high on any older assets and take a couple of years to build something better around whatever you get back, the young guys on the roster, and prospects who will come up over that time.

I’m sure that’s terribly unpopular, but I think it’s better than desperately chasing silver medals if Tavares walks and hoping whatever you end up with makes up the difference and solves last year's problems.

No, what you say makes sense. But could we hold off dealing with the hypothetical of what happens if JT leaves? The Isles don't pay me enough to worry THAT much....

If JT doesn’t sign I think that you will see a retooling for sure, however I think L & M want to win now so who knows.
That said if JT signs which I think he will they will go all in to become a cup contender, using assets to trade for needed pieces and also get rid of some bad contracted players.
Going to be interesting to see what happens.

I think a rebuild if JT walks make a ton of sense UIF. You cannot count of the FA market to get impact type players. Seems the Free Agency marked dried up a couple of year back since the Isles finally got owners willing to spend.
