There's more, but it was an article about PJB/MaxPac/Karlsson returning back to where they used to play. The relevant portion:

Speaking of surprising clubs, John Tavares, too, has noticed what his old team is up to these days.

Like Pacioretty, because he knows the players in that Islanders organization, I don’t think Tavares is shocked by his former team’s success under Barry Trotz. And perhaps knowing that is why it was so hard for him to leave July 1.

“A big reason why my decision basically came down to the wire was just because the impact that place meant on me and what I feel about that organization,” Tavares told The Athletic after practice on Monday. “Certainly the skill set that’s there, the players, the type of people that are there, they’ve got a good team, they’ve got good players and they’re doing well.’’

In many ways it probably stinks that Tavares has to wait so long to play in front of his old fans, although the flip-side to that argument is that perhaps enough time will have passed that the raw emotion will have dissipated to some degree. Although I’m guessing that’s not really the case.

Tavares’ return game on Feb. 28 was switched from Brooklyn to the Nassau barn and that suits the former Islanders captain just fine. It’s a rink that he loves.

“Certainly I think the real identity with the organization was always with the Coliseum,” Tavares said. “We played an exhibition game there last year which was a lot of fun. It’s a hell of a building. It was a lot of fun playing there. Some great playoff series there. Hell of an atmosphere. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun playing in it. Obviously I’ll be on the other side of it now so that will be a different feeling. But I think it’s a special place for that fan base and that organization and for myself, too. It’s a place where I began my career, had my first goal, first game; it’ll be fun going back there.’’

One should never base an entire reflection of reality from social media but Isles fans were not shy in voicing their displeasure on Twitter after No. 91’s decision to leave. To make matters worse, New York didn’t receive any compensation since Tavares joined the Leafs as a UFA, so there’s a good chance it will be a boo-fest on Feb. 28. One would hope that some of the Islanders faithful will show their appreciation for the player Tavares was during his nine seasons in New York.

“Yeah I mean, it’s really out of my control,’’ Tavares said. “However they feel is how they feel. All I hope is that they saw me give all I had for nine years and that I was completely invested in being an Islander. I loved it there. I made a decision that I thought was best for myself and my career. That place still means a lot to me. A lot of great people who had a big impact in my life and a big reason I am who I am today. But obviously they’re very proud and protective of their hockey team and what it means to them. They’re not very nice to the visitor, at least when I was still part of it, and I’m sure it’ll be similar for myself. But it’ll be fun to play in.’’

The interesting part will be to compare the fans’ receptions for Pacioretty, Karlsson and Tavares. All three former captains left under different circumstances.

Pacioretty may or may not have asked for a trade, but both sides at least agree a change of scenery was good for everyone. How do Habs fans respond Saturday to that? I think it will be a 50-50 mix.

Karlsson was offered an eight-year extension by the Senators, but the reality is, the ship had sailed by that point and most Ottawa fans blame owner Eugene Melnyk for the way that all played out. My guess is they receive Karlsson warmly.

Tavares? I think some of it will depend on where the Isles are in the standings. If they continue to surprise, it might help ease the feeling of abandonment. But of the three, he’s probably facing the harshest crowd reaction.

That would be pretty funny. Leak it and then call his agent with a low ball offer.

If he was smart he'd just stop answering questions about it. There are precisely zero Islanders fans that are going to read quotes from him saying that he "tried his hardest" and "loved the team/org/arena/etc..." and go "oh wow he's a good guy, nevermind I don't hope he gets hit by a bus anymore"

Of course not, he's programmed by an IT guy every morning with the same bland hockey buzzwords he's been regurgitating since he was 15.

Just paid $200 a seat for the Tavares game at the coliseum. If this d bag thinks he’s gonna be received well he’s off his rocker. Why he’s even commenting on the isles is nothing other than guilt. At the end of the day he felt he had a better shot at winning with the leafs. It’s really that simple. He can save all his rhetoric. The bottom line will always be the bottom line and it’s his doing. He ruined his legacy by being slick with his departure and leaving the isles with nothing in return. Anything else he says is wasted breath. He’s on the level of Dale Hunter, Darcy Tucker, and anyone else who’s forever hated.

JT really tried hard coasting back on defense. JT is wasting his time. He was a horrible leader and only cared about putting up his points.

What kills me is he purposely said he didn’t want to be traded so the Leafs didn’t give up assets. Completely planned the guy is scum.
