Staple's article about Kovar brings up a few points, but the best one might be that if a center goes down, the Isles are pretty much screwed:

There is also the not-so-small matter of center depth in the Isles organization right now. Without Kovar, the next centers on the depth chart are Ryan Hitchcock, Connor Jones and Travis St. Denis. Stephen Gionta is still practicing on a tryout basis and there’s a good chance he ends up signing now with Kovar gone, but Gionta is 35 and, while one of the hardest-working guys around, cannot give a team what Kovar could have.

One would have to think that a potential roster spot and $2 million would have been better spent by Lamoriello on a higher-end NHL center had he not jumped for Kovar. Between that $2 million and Filppula’s $2.75 million (plus a no-move clause), the Islanders likely could have found a better solution to their fourth center spot on a short-term deal.

I don't know...the Isles have other players I'd much rather see slide from wing into the center position than any of the guys Staple mentions. But yeah, maybe giving Kovar a look wouldn't have been the worst move for depth purposes.

I agree and disagree with that.

I agree because, and I'll apologize in advance for questioning the All-Mighty Lou and Trotz, it was stupid not giving Kovar a shot. The guy was a leading scorer in the KHL for 5 years and he should have at least had a chance to prove that he either belonged or didn't. Not the end of the world, but I think it was a bit shortsighted.

However, I also disagree because if a center goes down then Beau will likely slide to center and Bellows (or another winger) will get the call from BPT. Beau may never be a superstar, but his versatility and defensive play is going to make him a massive piece of the puzzle moving forward.

From all reports out there his skating was below par. Maybe it was so bad that they could tell just from practices and scrimmages that he wasn't going to be able to cut it and that's why they tried to send them down. You actually think they just waived him without really knowing what they had? (Not saying you but people in general)

Guy sucked imho. If he was going to be affective in the NHL regular season he should have been very noticeable in the pre season games and wasn't. The KHL is the KHL and the NHL is played at a higher, quicker level, and even he admitted it was tougher and a different game.

As far as covering an injured Center. If its Barzal then your (frank)ed whether you have Kovar or not. If its Nelson I 100% agree with you on Tito's versatility and also komorov is a Center so if a C3 or C4 goes down he can slide in. Injuries are part of the game unfortunately and teams have to deal with them or they are (frank)ed. The VGK lost 3 Goalies last year and pulled through.

Bottom line is Kovar wasn't the answer for the Isles in Lou and Trotz's eyes . Lets see if he gets a contract from another Team in the NHL. My guess would be He found out that he should have stayed in the KHL and will go home and sign a contract.
Just my opinion.

Guy sucked IMO Mick. He looked a step slow in all zones. Larger ice surface is much more forgiving you have more space and time. In the NHL your gonna get hit or have some one on you.
I agree He won't be here. He will sign in the KHL again.

Yep, that's what I was thinking. I'd much rather see Beau or even Bailey slide into the vacant center spot than have Gionta in there, especially if it's a top-six C that goes down. Like, if Nelson goes down and the Isles are rolling Barzal - Filppula - Cizikas - Gionta down the middle, that's bad news.

One thing you have to remember. When you switch a winger from one line to Center on another line Your screwing with two lines. Tough enough you have an injury to a center pivot and that line is now limping, if you take a center from another line and juggle other lines around now you maybe effecting more than just the injured center's line. I also don't think we would see Gionta. I think Komorov would slide to C and JHS, KB etc. will come up to play wing. Just my opinion.

Injuries suck and are part of the game obviously but lets hope We don't have any major ones this year.

Yep, point taken. But I've been wanting to see Lee on the first line anyway, so Beau going to 2C and Lee to LW on the first line is fine by me

If need be they can move a few players to center and call up a wing. Its not really a screaming issue. There's also a possibility that if need be they can bring in someone via trade. This isn't Snows isles where they will always pull from within and then drown.

No, I don't and just to be clear I am not really actively complaining about it. I think it was a little too quick of a decision, but it's not something I'm going to lament about ever.

I won't pretend to know how subpar his skating actually is/was but there are a few guys on the roster who's skating I'd probably also describe as "subpar".

That's it, no big deal. There was an extremely high chance he was a bust on NA ice anyway so I'm not gonna hold it against anyone. Just seems like if they went through all the trouble to scout/sign him and he came all the way across the world...a game or two wouldn't have ruined anything. Anyway...not a major issue here.

That's 100% true, but if Nelson goes down I'd rather replace him with Beau and Beau with Bellows than I would Nelson with, say...Hitchcock/Jones/St. Denis. If any center goes down long-term I would assume they would have to go shopping on the waiver wire or wade into the trade market.
