This is what I absolutely loathe about today's NHL. If the hits clean, it should serve as a lesson to Barzal. Not a reason to turn the game into a circus chasing the guy that crushed him (cleanly) all over the ice trying to get retribution, despite that guy doing nothing wrong.

Now an illegal hit, I'm all for it. But today's NHL: big clean hit = stupid staged fight between neither the hitter or the hit-ee. It's terrible.

- eichiefs9

I don't like the BS staged fight and the immediate response BS either Chiefs, however did you ever get your ass kicked or been targeted after hitting an oppositions player in a game? it makes you think and maybe keeps you from throwing that hit next time.
I don't mind MM or Johnson etc. lining up a guy who took a run at Barzal or Tito etc.

Have to keep the guy looking to intimidate your finesse players honest and answer the bell if they are going to run and gun for your teammates.

If a guy hits Barzal to get him off the puck.. no big deal. If Burns had of caught him and burried him into boards.. game over. Just like the "clean hit" by Gudbranson on the kid who was playing his first shift in the NHL. He did not have the puck yet, but it was on the way. He "didn't have his head up" ... blah blah blah. You have a guy that is 6'5" 245 lbs crushing a smaller player. He burried him in the head with his shoulder on a "clean hit". Hamonic went after him immediately.... That was probably not a wise decision by Hamonic but it was the right one. You have to let other teams know if they are going to take RUNS at your skilled guys they are going to have to answer for it. that is hockey...

and yes Bossy still took a beating. Especially in front of the net which is why his career was only 10 years, but guys knew when they went after him Clark was coming.

- niteislander

So what you're saying is that if player A throws a good, clean, solid check on player B, then player C should fight player A as a deterrent so he doesn't do that again. Correct?
If so, then why did Bossy continue to take a beating when the opponent knew Gillies would go after them?
Listen, if an opponent is taking liberties with your teammates, then yes, stand up for them.

Its a team of 5 guys out there and they are all a part of it. Obviously the main scheme is to get the puck to Barzal where he has time and options, but that takes everyone clicking to get it done.

The PP looks awesome and your going to change it. IF it isn't broke don't fix it Cappy!

Agree to disagree on this one.

- nyisles7

So I am Cappy b/c I want Pulock on the point instead of Leddy? I love comments like this on HB. If you watched any preseason and the first 3 games you could see that Pulock on the point is a big concern for teams. The same way having Burns on the PP for Sharks yesterday is... it makes the forwards have to pay a bit more attention to him which opens up the passing lanes even more for Bailey, Barzal, Lee, etc.

Saying I want him instead of Leddy is not Capuano. Capuano would have Pelech on the point. Obviosly Trotz somewhat agrees as he has Pulock out there a lot of the time.

It's 3 games in and the PP is operating at a very nice 27.3%. Right now there's no need to change anything. I'd also love to see Pulock at the point on PP1, but spreading some talent to PP2 is also not the worst thing.

I have complete faith that this coaching staff will make appropriate changes as needed if Leddy plays his way off PP1 or Pulock forces their hand to move him up to Leddy's spot there.

I think the issue arises with the borderline hits..........not the perfectly clean ones. Some of the borderline hits don't get penalized, and yet they can result in major injuries.

And yes, Bossy still took a beating, even though Gillies rode shotgun. But Bossy had a target on his back by virtue of his skill level. Can you imagine the liberties that would have been taken had Gillies not been there?

Gillies took more than a few guys apart and sent one player to the hospital and Bossy was still a target. I agree you need to respond to cheap shots but there is no magic solution to star players getting hit.

The problem is today we have the instigator penalty which teams avoid getting like the plague. Retribution is so much more a thing of the past than anything at this point. Players like Wilson and Gudas have zero fear of laying illegal hits as they clearly demonstrate on a consistent basis . Having Ross Johnston or Matt Martin in the line up will not deter it.

With Leddy and Barzal out there the zone entries on the PP have been awesome. You need to have control in the zone before you can go to work. Leddy is also quick and makes fast passes. More to a pP then a hard Slap Shot.
Lets just agree to disagree on this because its almost pure madness to change up your PP unit when its clicking.

I know they don't. And I'm fine with defending your teammates for that. What I'm talking about is a clean hit that maybe knocks the wind out of you. You pop back up after a couple seconds and get back at it. Nowadays, that's a reason for a fight. That's the discussion. You have to defend your teammates against goons like Wilson. Absolutely.

Yup, if I'm a player on another team I try to hit Barzal cleanly every shift. If it gets the Isles going after that player and not concentrating on the game, and taking a penalty, why wouldn't you. In saying that I don't think Barzal is going to get hit much. Way to shifty.

He’ll get his bell rung eventually it’s inevitable. I said last year he skates along that blue line with his head down way to often. He seems to be a little more aware now but it’s inevitable. Part of the game especially with him being the primo target on our team.

It’s not foolish at all and I agree he will keep most likely be there eventually BUT as others have stated why fix something that isn’t broke? Three games in nothing is set there will be changes eventually.

There isn't retribution like in the past thats for sure, however players take numbers.
Also the instigator penalty is a bit of a deterrent, however I think if Barzal. Tito, Ebs etc. get pounded on a boarder line hit Trots is gonna tell MM and or Johnson etc. to go make that guy answer for that. Regardless if they get 2 additional minutes. Especially if he has faith in his PK and the team is ahead by a good margin.

Trots used Wilson in the very same way if someone went after Backstrom, Oshie Etc.
