I liked Bailey shooting.....the PP finally has guys on their proper side.
The shots on goal however can’t be 46 a night. Not gonna win many games with SOG. 46 to 20.

2 points is 2 points... they looked like garbage. we got a few weeks of this before they make any moves. stinks for greiss he deserved a shutout but isles seem to always make things fun at the end
- theguy

Two on the road is good anyway you get them. Especially against a divisional opponent. Isles walked into Carolina with it being their opener, their home opener, full house, lots of energy and emotion. Not surprising Carolina came out hard and isles were on their heels.

Most encouraging: Greiss looked real good. He looked like the goalie who played against Florida in the playoffs. Isles are really going to need that this season

Agreed. Greiss did look good. But you’re not winning many games allowing 46 shots a night.

I doubt Trotz is happy about that and I'm sure they'll work on it to get the shots down. The Isles stole one last night, but I'll take it.

He looked pretty sharp the couple games I saw with him in preseason. Hopefully he turns the page on last season.
- Cptmjl

I wasn't able to watch more than a few minutes here and there of the preseason so I have no idea how anyone looked. I don't put much stock into preseason play anyway. But I'm glad he looked good.

Hearing Trotz last night, no, he wasn't very happy (which is good...there's obviously quite a bit to improve on). I liked that he talked about Carolina and the approach they take to games, too. Makes you believe there's an actual strategy here now that adapts a little bit depending on the opponent.

That was the best post game in years UIF. That is what a real coach sounded like. Wonder if Garth watched?

it's gonna take a while for this team to get what trotz is teaching. A lot of the players here have never played under a real nhl head coach before, so they've got a ton of stuff to unlearn from the clown show that we had under snow.

Trotz will get them there. It will take time. Anyone notice Scott Gomez on the bench?

Thats my boy. Bails. Tied with Tavares in Goals. leading in GWG. Im kidding.
I think toronto media should publish a story on how Bailey sniped a GW from Tavares PP spot instead of notifying us everytime tavares farts in toronto. Last i checked its still the Matthews show up there.

We stole that game. Granted the shots in 1st 2 periods it seemed carolina was just though any shot on net. I like how much more structured we are already and how forwards are supporting the dman more. Definitely have more work to do but seems like we getting there. I think that new 4th line with Uncle Leo, Filipula and Fritz was one of best lines last night. well done.

I thought we were outplayed but it was also Carolina home opener and they have some higher expectations for that team this year.
Big two points. Its ok to have a ugly win here and there.
Dont quote me but this might be first time new GM, Coach and Captain have won first game of season in their first game at helm.

Id be lying if i didnt want to strangle Bailey in first period when he has two glorious chances to shot and he opted to pass.

Glad he had that rifle of a winner. seems that left side on PP could bring up his Goal total this year. Also will allow pulock not to be overly marked by opposing PK.

Trotz will work with him and get to realize he can be more than the good passer.

was ugly to watch how many times they'd start to move the puck out of their own end, turn it over just outside the blueline with either a bad pass, trying to stickhandle through one of the canes, or just simply losing control of the puck and having it roll off the end of the stick. The ice was terrible, puck bouncing everywhere and seemed that Barzal took it down a gear in order to be able to maintain his footing.

The canes played like they knew they couldn't pass the puck around a ton with the ice in that condition and tossed everything at the net, where the isles kept trying to make a perfect play which wasn't a good idea on that ice.

Hopefully not as big a problem next game but I noticed the only time the team had any possession in the offensive zone was chipping it in deep, and then getting on it and cycling the puck along the boards. They were very lucky to get out of that one with the two points given how badly they were turning it over but at least inside their zone they rarely left someone wide open the way they did almost every second shift last year.

This is for all of you naysayers. Filpula is a point-per-game player. Just sayin'

I kept thinking we got Frans back last night. He did remind of him a little.

I was only able to catch the last about 8 minutes of the 3rd. From what I saw, Greiss looked good. Positioning, no wasted movements and pretty much squared to the shooters. The shot totals against were through the roof again. Sbisa looked horrible. 2 giveaways in one sequence and looked like he was lost. Like he didn't know his assignment. JB looked slow. Barzal was Barzal. They did look like they were actually playing defense though. Like there was a system in place.
From what you guys said, Trotz wasn't happy with the performance I only got the Carolina feed). That's good. We need a coach that realizes things need improvement. Let's hope they continue to improve.
I know it's a very, very small sample size. I'm not bashing them, just observations. Let's see how they come around. I think Barry will tweak the lines and pairings a bit.
