Of course it’s punishment. He’s not injured and he’s not on the ice. Trotz won’t throw him under the bus. My guess would be that he either dogged it in practice or just isn’t buying in.

Has being late for practice or team meeting etc. written all over it.

It doesn't look good. It could be a maintenance day for an injury, but it doesn't sound like it.

I get that but time out of practice or games described as “personal days” are usually a different story. This is obviously some kind of disciplinary thing.

Yeah, it may be something or it may be nothing. Most other players, we wouldn't even think twice about this. With Ho-Sang, it's not hard to imagine it has to do with either a missed appointment, not following instructions, or whatever.

All I'm saying is this kid has the talent and he has a great opportunity right now with a clean slate and a strong need for talent up front. If he pulls his same BS where he's just "asking questions," or whatever he does to frustrate the crap out of everyone, and ends up on the bad side of yet another coach, I don't want to hear about how he's just misunderstood. At some point, maybe it's not everyone else in the world this guy's ever run into, and the problem might be in the mirror.

I really, really hope he just shuts up, listens, shows up on time, and executes. He does that early on and makes a name for himself, then he'll have all the time in the world later on to be a personable, free-spirit oddball who bends the rules. But he has to earn that.

Ho Sang has an excellent coach in Trotz. He tells you to do something you do it. Would be a real shame if Ho Sang never takes advantage of all his talent. I love that it is all on the players now. No more excuses about Doug and Cappy.

Part of (Friday was) probably coming to a new group, setting a standard, I think that was a big part of day one and today was, like many other camps, was tactical and structural where you’re talking about the things that are most important,” Thomas Hickey said. “For us, starting with coming back into our own zone and playing with the puck once you’re back in the defensive zone. That’s pretty standard but I think there’s a reason why it was the first thing addressed.”

And there were some interesting sights through the three group sessions: Veteran defensemen Scott Mayfield and Nick Leddy doing pushups on the ice after the first set of drills, for instance.

“Not here, that’s for sure,” Mayfield said when asked if he’s done pushups during practice before. “But (Trotz) has some rules – penalties, getting goals scored on you, stuff like that. I think I lost the game for goals scored and then I was doing pushups. But it’s great. He holds you accountable and he makes you think about not getting scored on, not taking penalties. You don’t want to do pushups because you’re already tired.”

“We gave them some defensive zone structure, some mindset structure we want offensively,” Trotz said. “Obviously we gave up a lot of goals last year. We’re going to correct that by getting everyone on the same page, it’s a work in progress but we want to make sure everybody has the terminology, has the structure, has the information. And we’re finding out which people are processing that information, which people are being true pros. So not only are they being tested on the ice, they’re being tested on how we do things going forward.”

Jack Capuano had conditioning tests that were grueling. Doug Weight didn’t have a day devoted to conditioning at the start of camp, but there was a heavy dose of skating early on. Friday was something different for the Islanders veterans, though, and the ones asked about the differences all said this change was welcome.

“Nothing to discredit Dougie or (former GM Garth Snow), because what they did for me and my career was huge, but the fresh eyes watching you, some fresh drills, just changing things up a bit – yesterday was one of the hardest days of camp I’ve had since I’ve been here,” Mayfield said. “We needed that. We’ve got to be one of the hardest-working teams in the league and I guarantee we will be when you see who’s coaching us.”

“Being here through Jack and Dougie, two very good coaches and both guys that I have a lot of respect for and the guys here had a lot of respect for, now we’re on our third coach in three years – that’s on the players, in my mind,” Hickey said. “If there’s a standard set it’s meant to be met and the next part is on us. Three people in here through 2 ½ years. So when there’s a standard set and things that Barry says, they’re going to have to be followed because he’s got the pedigree that what he does certainly works.”

I love this
