When I read Sean Avery's book, one of the things he talked about was the lack of respect the players had for Torterella. He said that as a coach who couldnt skate and stick handle all the players on the blue jackets laughed at him screaming at what they should be doing. My point here is that having a coach like Trotz who literally just won the cup will have the ear and respect of every player on this team. Thats huge.

I'm not taking Avery's word on anything. Torts can coach whether he can skate or stick handle or not. Maybe the Jackets would like Cappy or Doug to coach instead?

Tortorella won the Cup in 2004, so if you believe Avery, that may not be much of a factor. I have no idea whether Trotz can skate and stick handle. I also tend to think Avery exaggerates to sell books. I believe Trotz will quickly gain the respect of the room when he demonstrates that his understanding of the game far surpasses that of his predecessors on the Island........despite never having played a game in the NHL.

Not much of a stretch there... He’s the best and only legitimate coach this team has had since Nolan.

I think you missed my point entirely, and responded based on your thoughts on Avery. As much as you hate Avery, Torts is just as bad.......frankly even worse. Every member of the Rangers attended Boogards funeral EXCEPT coach Tort. Inexusable, especially considering coach was privy to all the pain pills left out in the lockeroom for players to take when needed......and allowed Boogard to continue even when not playing furthering his addiction/disease.

My point wasnt about being able to skate or stick handle, it was about players respecting the coach. Also, you can't print things that aren't true, as they are defamation, and liable for suit.

Avery isn't a credible source. Torts not attending a funeral has nothing to do with his coaching abilities.

I 100% believe the story as it was written. I can assure you if it wasnt true, Torterella would have sued him no doubt.

You can - it happens all the time. It's very hard to win a libel suit. It has to be egregious, like repeatedly calling someone a child molester. Someone's opinion about his coach doesn't even come close.

First of all you do not have to repeatedly say something defaming in order for it to be libel. One time in writing is enough. Secondly, it wasnt an opinion about Torts, it was fact.

I think Torts should have went to the funeral but I do not know the details behind it. All I know is Torts is a Cups winning coach and did a very good job with the Rangers. Coaches are not paid to be the players buddies. They are paid to get results and Torts gets results.

I read the story and every player and coach went to Boogards funeral except Torts who apparently had minor surgery on his shoulder, and that was his excuse. Either way he shoulda gone outta respect for the guy and his family.

Torts is a d bag and he's basically lost every team he's coached. His style is not one that lasts.....

My only reason for bringing up Torts is that players respond well to a coach they respect. The isles will have some young kids coming in and its a lot easier to flourish under a guy like Trotz who probably sits down and makes sense, rather than a dictator like Torts.

How is Avery saying what every other player was thinking anything but opinion? Is Avery a mind reader? Has any other player backed up his statement? The guy was trying to make money. There is no money in saying everything is great. Conflict sells. He has no credibility - he never did.

They call the NHL the show for a reason. Im not saying Sean Avery is 100% right in the head, but i can guarentee you the stories he told were based on his experience, and not some made up dream. The bottom line is the NHL lockeroom had bowls of pills for players to grab as needed. Everything from pain killers, to sudafed to get jolts of energy before the game. Clearly some guys (tough guys mainly) used and abused those pain killers to be able to take the pain. Coach Torts was made aware of Boogards pill problem and banished him from the lockeroom, which started the depression, furthering the addiction. The point here is that this story read as fact to me, and Im pretty sure the NHL would have taken Avery to court had it not been true. It was pretty serious....

I rather have Barry coaching than Torts but lots of coaches would love Torts resume.

Read the book man.....it was pretty cool as a hockey fan. Avery was boys with Shanny and Chelios who were and are NHL royalty. Players hang out and talk. He was just relaying stories and naming names.

We were discussing whether none of the players respected Torts because he couldn't skate, not bowls of pills. I don't trust anything Avery has to say without some proof or someone else confirming the story. Feel free to trust him all you want.

I was referring to the non skating and stick handling as part of why a guy like Avery butted heads with Torts. To me it doesnt matter if coach can skate, but Avery's point was he thought of himself as a good hockey player, and Torts would bench him for personal reasons, rather than his on ice ability. It was there that he basically chirped Torts for screaming at his players non stop to do XYZ, and yet the players tuned him out.

I trust the stories that I read........he's bananas, but the stories were def entertaining. Funny how Brodeur is revered as this NHL god, yet he cheated on his wife with her sister, and married her. To me thats bananas.......not Avery trying to draw penalties and play his role as agitator.

In theory, yeah. The flip side to all that I guess is that every coach has his favorites. Go into any team's blog during the season...even the ones with the best coaches...and there will be fans wondering why some fourth-line plug is getting way more minutes than he should at the expense of more skilled players...probably because the plug nods his head at the right times in practice and takes instruction really well even if he sucks in the games. Hopefully this staff doesn't fall too much in love with the many sandpaper guys that were signed and gives the younger skill players fair chances and some room to make mistakes.

But I have a better feeling with this team...without Tavares but with a real coach and GM...than I did last year with Tavares but with Snow and Weight running the show.

I’m sure he is. Lot of successful coaches were probably not well liked by their players.
