If we got Trouba and Panarin we’re instantly a legit playoff team depending on our goaltending of course. I’m not into the idea of tanking due to the draft lottery. I know we’ll lose hahaha

Definitely! I don't see that happening though. At all!

Not a chance in hell. Not a chance here either. We’ll wind up signing Trevor gillies to a five year one way contract but it will be only for 1.5 million per year so it will be deemed not a big deal.

I wasn't suggesting they could get both, just that I'd like to see how their situations play out and see if it's not possible to cherrypick one of them if/when they become available.

Yeah the lottery sucks and I'm certainly not banking on anything but someone somewhere owes us some sort of karma

I think the Islanders have made themselves infinitely more attractive to Sorokin at this point.
Not only have they cleaned the shit out of the front office, but they've added a top-tier coach and a goaltending coaching staff that may honestly be second-to-none in the NHL now.

If they can make themselves marginally competitive I think he comes over when his deal is done.

Hopefully Soderstrom and Sharek develop well with all this great coaching. Hopefully one of these goalies step up in case Sorokin does not come over.

Could be a very interesting year if the Isles can land a top 4 dman or top 6 forward.

I keep forgetting about Skarek. I really liked that pick. I'm unsure of what his contract with Lahti in the KHL looks like but I'd love to see him over here in the AHL sooner than later.

I have no idea about Sharek but he does sound very promising. Chances are very good the Isles will not be struggling to develop a goalie like the last 12 years.

If you asked me in April would I take this scenario or not I would have said; "Hell yes!"

1. You lose JT to UFA.. however..
2. You get Lou as GM.
3. You get Trots as Head coach.
4. You get Whalstrom in the draft.
5. You get Korn, Gruden, Greco, and Lambert as associate coaches.

all of us would have signed up for this scenario. Give these guys some time to work with these kids. It's going to be fun this year.

A way to reframe this is:

1. You get Lou as GM, Trotz as coach, and an awesome staff...however...
2. You lose JT
3. You take back Martin with no salary retained
4. You pay Ross Johnston $1m/yr for 4 years
5. You sign Hickey for 4 years
6. You pay Komarov $3m/yr for 4 years.

I'm not saying the team can't surprise this year, or that I'm unhappy about everything. Not at all. My biggest frustration with this team over the years was seeing players like Nino, Strome, and others struggle and wondering whether they were to blame or whether it was the Isles having virtually no experience at any level of management or coaching. Now, we'll know for sure. But, this offseason's had some rough patches even beyond just JT.

Well said. There was a lot of good mixed with a lot of bad imo. Two steps forward and two steps back in almost typical Islanders fashion. I say almost typical because it’s usually two steps forward and three steps back. I can’t wrap my head around some of these contracts they were pointless and to me completely without thought. Four more years of hickey? Johnston? Komorav? Not one of those contracts make sense.

With that said I like everyone else is looking forward to the season and to see what new coaches can do for this squad though I can’t help but think Thompson still being here, Gomez, and some of these contracts reek and make me wonder if Snow really does have some semblance of influence or Lou isn’t all of which some of us are making him out to be.

A way to rewrite what you are complaining about...

1. You get Lou as GM, Trotz as coach, and an awesome staff...however...
2. You lose JT .. and his $11 mill+ of cap hit a year.

3. You take back Martin with no salary retained- although u are paying him less you still have the cap hit... which b/c of JT doesn't really matter. You get a guy who was the heart and soul of this team. who I saw just this weekend in the parking lot of Iceworks flipping tires with some of the young kids.

4. You pay Ross Johnston $1m/yr for 4 years.. which is a wopping 200k more than you paid Boulton for years to be a healthy scratch for 99% of the games but somehow now it matter.

5. You sign Hickey for 4 years. who despite a horrific coaching staff and brutal defensive partners had the best corsi and advanced stats on the team. (I don't love Hickey but I have faith in Trotz and Lou more than Isles' fans).

6. You pay Komarov $3m/yr for 4 years... If he plays well it's cheap. If he stinks he will clear waivers in a minute.

Next year you have the following forwards that are currently UFA's or RFA's

Ho Sang 900k rfa
Dal Colle 900k rfa
john Stevens 700k rfa
Tanner Fritz 650k UFA
Beauvillier 900k rfa
Steve Bernier 650k UFA
Mike Sislo 650k UFA
Robein Lehner 1.5 mill UFA
Kuhnackl 700k UFA
Jan Kovar 2 mill UFA
Filppula 2.75 mill UFA
Anders LEE 3.75 mill UFA
Brock Nelson 4.25 UFA
Jordan Eberle 6 mill UFA
Ryan Pulock 2 mill RFA

That is around 24 mill.. we also have another 11 mill in cap room as of today.

While Lee, Bouv and Pulock should make more money. You have to assume one of the Nelson, Lee, Eberle, Ho Sang, and Beauv group will be gone. I assume many of the others will be gone too. The ones that play well will be awarded with an extension. the ones that don't will be sent on their way. It's crazy to be worried about cap space at this point.

if you are going to bring up Barzal He is signed for 2 more years. If you wanted to extend him next summer for 2 more after that then when his big contract comes up you have Leddy, Boychuk, Hickey, Cal etc all coming off the books. you might keep Leddy but still have a lot more coming off.

In no world is paying Komarov 3 million cheap. Nobody and I mean nobody was ok with paying boulton for not playing on this thread and using that as an example is bizarr and in no way justifies signing Johnston to a four year contract. Hickey (frank)ing sucks the only difference now is we’ll be laughing at him for another four years. The guy is terrible and trying to justify him being with this team for another four years is to me self defeating and why this team has sucked for as long as it has. Continued half arsed players staying with the team while decent to good players depart. There’s a reason why the Thomas Hickey’s of the world stay put. It’s because the rest of the nhl is aware they suck.
