If Lou and Barry what to keep Lee long term I doubt I will complain. Hopefully Lee will not break down for a while because of his size. Sure helps Lee is not the size of a Peca or Drury.

Yeah he’s bigger haha

Doug and Cappy can still be lousy coaches and everything about Nelson not be their fault. How come Lee has not be ruined by Cappy and Doug?

If winning doesn’t motivate you, if fear of letting your teammates down doesn’t motivate you, if money doesn’t motivate you, then some coach or a group of coaches are not gonna motivate you.

A) Lee is a better player
B) Lee was paired with better players
C) Lee has more heart and drive than Nelson

Again, I'm not saying that everything is on the coaches. Nelson has his own cross to bear. He is responsible for himself. If he doesn't have the drive to push himself, that's on him. But if he wasn't put in the right position to succeed then how could he. Nelson was not scouted to be a 40 goal scorer. He's a 20 goal scorer. I think he's got more in him than that. If the right coaching can pull that out of him then great. If not then it's all on him. He's got no excuses now.

Yep! Barry will have a much better system than Cappy and Doug and it's no comparison in terms of coaching talent, but if Nelson does not have the desire it will not mean much. Other players when they are not scoring still play hard and try on defense and Nelson has shown none of that.

Maybe not. He could just be playing because he's good at it and doesn't have the skills to be a plumber or a carpenter. Maybe he isn't passionate about the game and doesn't love it. I don't know I've never spoken to him. He doesn't appear to have any drive or passion for it. But I don't know.

I don’t argue with most of your post but “Nelson was not scouted to be a 40 goal scorer...”
um wut? He was a 1st round pick who’s biggest talent was putting the puck in the net. That’s the only reason he was a first round pick, to score goals...and not just 20 of them.

Overall I think Nelson has the talent to be better than Lee. Nelson has a better shot and has better puck skills and can skate better than Lee. Lee is much better with the desire and strength than Nelson. Lee did not always play with JT and had to work himself up to the #1 line.

I'm not expecting 40 goals from Nelson but 50-60 points should not be impossible. Let's hope Barry can do something in terms of motivating Nelson, but it will come down to Nelson wanting it and willing to work for it.

So where exactly were all these goals? Yeah he did good in high school. They didn't know about him because he got drafted out of high school. His biggest advantage was his size. That's it. Scouting reports had him pegged as a power forward.

Me too. I'd feel a little better about the defense if they brought in someone solid in the top 4 though.

I would as well. Just want a sure fire top 4 and no more 36 or 37 year old dman. Rather find out about Pelech under Barry. It has to be a clear top 4 upgrade or just use the dmen you have this year.

Right. Same for bottom 6 forwards. Next move must be a top 6 forward or top 4 dman otherwise go with what you have.

Based off where he was drafted and his goals per game, before he was drafted, I’d venture to guess/say it’s fair the organization was expecting a 30-40 goal scorer. I’m 6-foot-7, I’m taller than Nelson, does that make me first round material? I get your “power forward” statement/possible team assessment coming into that draft, but the Isles had to expect a guy that would eventually become a top 6 forward, not just some third line player who scores 20-25 a season. Most of which, I should add, come at very unimportant times.

Like I said, this is a smart contract for him. He’s gonna be playing on a team that probably won’t make the playoffs and he’ll prob get his 25/30 goals playing on a team with little expectation, perfect for a guy like him. Someone will pay him, I doubt it’ll be us.

I don't think people realize how much skill is on the roster that has been horrifically miss-coached and Miss-managed for years. Toews, Pulock, and Leddy are going to be much better players this year.

My dream was that the Islander players were so sick and tired of reading about how Tavares was the whole team that they collectively step up and have a great season, all while Toronto struggles. Tavares becomes so desperate that he asks to be traded back to the Isles.

Then I woke up......

Let's just agree that we're picking nits here. His biggest goal production was in high school. Which he was drafted right out of. The scouting reports all said they didn't know about him because of that. But because he was big, they projected him to be a power forward. After high school, he wasn't a big goal scorer. The Isles took him in hopes i guess of him becoming a power forward. Which, let's face it, he's not.
I have no issue with the contract. Maybe this being a 1 year show me deal will motivate him to kick the pig and pour in the goals. We'll see.

Well we don’t really know how good Toews is going to be? That’s not saying he won’t be great but he’s kind of an unknown quantity. As far as the other two go yeah agreed and I can say the same for the rest of the team also. Either buy in or be gone is what this season will be for all of the players I think the main question is how long will it take for these guys to realize they can’t do slow circles in the neutral zone or back check at a snails pace without repercussions? They’re all going to have to shake that blasé attitude when they show up for work.
