I don't mind honest competition for spots. I think a lot of Islanders are too comfortable and could use a push. The thing is, what are the chances we see any actual consequences?

Barring a big trade or two, the way I see this shaping up is you have about 8 or 9 guys competing for top-six spots (Barzal, Beau, Eberle, Lee, Nelson, Bailey, Ho-Sang, Ladd, and maybe one or two others), and about the same number competing for bottom-six spots (Cizikas, Martin, Clutterbuck, Johnston, Filppula, Kovar, Komarov, Kuhnahkl, and probably one or two I’m forgetting). In a perfect world, the best six from each group get spots, and the pressure would really be on guys like Bailey, Nelson and Ladd, who could really use the push. With so many bottom-six players competing for those roles, the message should pretty much be that Nelson and Ladd need to lock down top-six roles, or else. The question is, or else what? What do you do with a player like Ladd if he’s beat out for a top-six spot?

And you run into the same issue in the bottom six with some of the contracts handed out. I’m not sure what you do with Komarov, for example, if he comes in here and bombs, given the contract he got. Or what you do with Filppula’s NMC if he proves to be a bad option.

So, if the idea is to make comfortable people uncomfortable through real competition, I like that. But it’s hard for me to see a scenario where three or four aging vets with crazy contracts get waived if they’re out-competed. More likely, those who can easily go down to the AHL will probably go down to the AHL while garbage players with garbage contracts get preference because of their “experience.” But, we’ll see. Maybe this is really a new era and I’ll get surprised.

No I believe it's on a per-contract basis. I'm sure Kuhnackel could be buried as well. For the most part, anyone making over $1M is going to count against the cap somewhat if they get sent down.

so they can bury a lot of the contracts well those two

just found this on twitter

kuhnackle and johnston can be burried leaving 13 forwards as currently constructed

I don't know about "a lot" but they can definitely stick Loss Johnston and the Coon-knuckle in the minors to get their cap hit off the books.

sadly they would have 13 forwards which is about what you would expect for the regular season. still time but this seems like its close to final, also some good charts on how good pulock was 2nd half and on toews

I think you guys will like Mike Sislo in BPT this season. Pretty good little player. Played here last season. Little over .50 ppg. Hustles. plays decent 2 way game. Plays with heart.

Yeah i spoke to a bunch this weekend all of whom defended Tavares and all blamed isles management for allowing him the opportunity to walk. Komarov was a fan favorite.

Yes, that was my reading, too. Cap relief is calculated for the upcoming season to be $1,025,000 per player "buried" in the AHL.

The problem is his NTC/NMC and the length of the contract with an expansion draft coming your bottom 6 players being paid more than they should be are exactly who you want the option of jettisoning. These contracts are stupid and pointless there's no denying it. You guys defending this are being completely unobjective and homerish imo. Everything I see read says hes past his good play for a couple years. His underlying stats suggest that also. Honestly i think the guy will be useful for a couple years as long as his defensive play continues and he ups his game a little. I'm sure there were so many teams knocking on his door that we had to add the money, term, and conditions. Just like Johnston . Give me a break. I actually like the idea of Komarov but his contract is not good for the reasons I mentioned.

Ok so let me reiterate that they’re gonna suck and are going to have to eat this year. I don’t mind watching entertaining hockey. Let’s be honest here.....were used to them sucking anyway so what’s another year or two. I like the idea of a mini rebuild. I wanna see them hold onto as many young assets and let Lou do as he see’s fit. I’ll guarantee you he can’t be any worse than what we’ve seen.

There’s so much talk about bottom six forwards but sadly we’re gonna have a team of that and it is what it is. Sucks but the future is bright. The talent they drafted this past year is extremely exciting.

I mean i kinda smelled what you were cooking with the little boy pushing the little girl he likes scenario. But it doesn’t matter who honestly. The guys i went with were from Toronto (not in the NHL) and that’s who i was drinking with and having heated Tavares discussions with.

Your idea of entertaining and mine are different. Losing is not entertaining. Also, some of these guys have term they're not one year contracts so there's that.

Entertaining in so far as you can’t make this team a cup contender over night. So they are making a Lou Lam team. Defense first. They could score goals last year. Now they’re gonna play a defensive style game that gonna be built around hard hitting aggressive hockey (which to me is entertaining)
I know when Matt Martin was on this team that line was super entertaining to watch. Their possession game might have been best on team (i didn’t look up the stat).
