With just a few hours to go until the 3 p.m. trade deadline and some of the bigger names already off the board, the Islanders sit with the same roster and a ton of cap space. If it’s still that way after the whistle blows at 3, there will be many surprised people around the NHL that Lou Lamoriello either couldn’t pull off or wasn’t interested in any upgrades to his first-place team.

Matt Duchene was the first big name off the board on Friday and it was perhaps a double-whammy for the Isles: Not only did they have interest, according to several league sources, but they watched as the Senators spurned them for Columbus, a potential first-round playoff opponent for the Islanders.

It’s believed the Isles’ offer for Duchene centered around the team’s first-round pick in June and young forward Anthony Beauvillier, though it’s not known if that was the complete offer. Ottawa went for Columbus’ first-rounder and two mid-level prospects rather than Beauvillier, the 21-year-old forward who is already approaching 200 NHL games and scored his 14th goal of the season on Saturday night in Vancouver. You’d have to assume the possibility of another first-rounder from Columbus, conditional on Duchene signing with the Blue Jackets, pushed that deal over the top.

Looks like they're not afraid to move Beau to make something happen

- eichiefs9

This seems doubtful to me. Why would they pass on a cost-controlled 20-goal scorer on the rise for two "mid-level" prospects who may never even get to the NHL? Granted, I don't know a thing about CBJ's prospects, so maybe these guys project better than Beau, but the fact that they're described as mid-level makes me doubt that.

I see what you’re saying but I think these posts are also a bit short sighted. So because they surprised and are playing better than expected they shouldn’t try to improve and fill obvious holes? What would you say if Lameriello traded for Stone would you then condemn that move? You seem to think making a trade is not a good idea correct? I’m curious to see what the “playing on house money” crowds reactions are if Lameriello does make a move.

I would welcome any move that didn’t give up major pieces for a rental. The fans for the most part don’t know sh!t. The same fans that wanna give up assets for a rental who could ultimately walk (very snow esq move) are the same fans who yell SHOOT IT when there’s no play.

I think it’s situational with respect to the isles and their play at the deadline. Lou is a great GM and I’m sure he’s had conversations with a lot of GMs. The fact that no deal has been made tells me the ask is way to high for his liking and therefor will stay the course. My point here is i don’t see a problem with letting it ride and addressing the needs July 1st. The season is already a success IMO based on where the isles are now vs where everyone including us thought.

I had to leave my board, they were talking baseball and one poster who said we should stay away from Laine.

Gotta give to get. Not surprised that Beau would be part of a package.
- Isleshockeyman

I’m guessing they asked for the 1st, Beau, Wahlstrom or Bellows AND Dobson or Wilde.

That was pretty much Duchene’s going rate and im happy we didn’t pull the trigger.

Obviously it depends on who the player is and what the deal is. Maybe there's a bargain out there...who knows! In general, though, no matter what's given up, I'd be happy to see a quality player come in and play for the Isles, and I'm not going to be mad or whatever if one's brought in. I'll enjoy the hell out of it for the rest of the season and hopefully during a long playoff run.

If that player walks after the season and Lou gave up a truckload of assets, then, yeah, looking back during the offseason I'll wonder if that was really the best move for the organization. That fourth slice of pizza looks like a no-brainer in the moment, but maybe not the best idea when you're on the shitter later on.

I see major deadline deals, especially for rentals, as things you do when you're all-in for that year, especially if your window is at its peak or closing. I don't think the Isles are there, but that's just my take. If we're talking about filling gaps in the lineup as something a little longer term, I don't know if the deadline's the best time to do that when you have desperate teams and rentals blowing up the market.

It's all a gamble, though. Who cares what you gave up if you bring in the exact right player and he helps you win the Cup, right? I just think the odds of that are a bit too slim relative to the risk of severely overpaying for a guy who walks in a couple of months, all for maybe a second round exit or whatever.

Very well stated UIF. It will be very different if Lou does not make a trade and when Garth did not make a trade. Garth was just afraid to trade young talent.

All it apparently took to not get traded when Snow was still the GM was simply asking not to be traded.

Agreed. The problem may come that if the teams chasing you "get better" by making deals and the Isles do nothing, then they've gotten worse. Obviously it would have to be seen how those deals pan out. I, like you, don't want to see them bet the farm on a rental just to have them leave. The future is looking bright. We've got good prospects in the pipes, draft picks and cap space.

If what chiefs posted is correct, the isles offer of their first this year and Beauvillier wasn’t enough. Columbus offered a conditional first (a second first rounder) if Duchene resigns. That’s a big if.....i don’t love that trade personally.

I'd like Hoffman he scores a lot and helps barzal and pp won't cost a ton. Go hard at panarin in july.

Edit: I'd also give up prospects and a pick for huberdeau as his on a 4 year deal and a reasonable cap hit

It’s weird to me that the re building rangers refuse to part with Henrik who arguably is their biggest asset. Two years now and he’s still on the team. I get that he loves New York but from a business perspective id have traded him last year at the deadline

Its impossible to trade him with his NMC. He has to approve any trade, its really that simple. Ball is all in his court. He was asked last year he said no.
