1. Artemi Panarin, Blue Jackets – Depending on who you ask, the price is either extremely rich or things haven’t gotten far enough along in talks to have a great understanding of what the concrete price tag is for Panarin.

Multiple sources echoed a report earlier this week from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that said the Los Angeles Kings make sense for Panarin, with one team executive predicting that’s where he ultimately ends up in free agency. “I think he’s going to L.A.,” he said when asked for a destination. The Islanders, Rangers and Panthers are also still considered the front-runners to land him after July 1, and it makes sense for the Islanders to pay a steep price now to land him out of those teams.

“I think Lou (Lamoriello) can get him signed,” said one source.

But Panarin is such a great player that he’s worth the high price as a rental, even if a team doesn’t have a shot at keeping him. The option to keep him in Columbus is always there, as long as the Blue Jackets look like legitimate contenders, but there’s doubt around the league that Columbus will go down that route.

Whoops vukota beat me to it

I'm hoping the Oilers will send Lucic (1.75 retained), Puljujarvi and a 3rd to the Kings for Kovy.
- Wildschwein

I guess that's possible. It'd sure be an interesting trade for both sides.

https://theathletic.com/819013/2019/02/14/rebuilding-the-kings-why-ilya-kovalchuk-should-be-traded-sooner-than-later/

Dillman: If someone is going to take Kovalchuk at this stage, the team would only have to pay about a quarter of his salary for the rest of the season. Plus the acquisition cost is going to be minimal.

There might be a team that thinks Kovalchuk — in the right situation — could be an asset. If the cost is minimal, it’s not the same as the top names that are circulating, like Mark Stone, Matt Duchene and Artemi Panarin.

With those names, the acquisition costs will be astronomical. Not every contender is going to want to meet that high of a price. But lots of contenders are going to be looking for subtle tweaks and improvements, so there could be a fit.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported last week that Kovalchuk might be willing to waive his no-move clause for the right situation. It is our understanding that has not changed.

I really think Kovulchuk is a good fit for this year. Gives the PP immediate help.

Yeah but, like Vukota said, he's still got two years left at a pretty pricey number. They have to move out some kinda salary to accommodate that. If Ladd won't waive, they could consider trading Bailey...but that still leaves a hole at RW since Eberle is as good as gone after this season.

Garth being front and center to this season and Lou and Barry doing this with his players is pretty great.

Meaning.....heading into the post season, of all the names being spoken about, i think Kovalchuk is the best fit, because he’s still ridiculously talented and the cost wouldn’t be as much as Panarin or Dushcene. Obviously he’s signed for a few more, but for this post season, i think he’s the fit. I also believe the isles have a legitimate shot this year and their main glaring weakness is the PP.....Kovalchuk addresses this years problem

You guys do realize their is a history between Kovy and Lou correct?

https://www.si.com/nhl/20...vils-bargain-2010-feature

It did not exactly turn out well as he skipped town for the KHL while the Devils.. LOU .. were punished for the contract.

https://www.nhl.com/news/...ontract-modified/c-708210

A. I don't like Kovy at this age joining this team. He is not what people remember him to be from 2010.
B. I don't want him on my team for the next 3 years.
C. My guess is Lou still hates the friggin guy.

Ladd could be going the other way for all we know. The isles have a ton of space so salary really isn’t an issue.

Past his prime. Only way I would take him is if they took Ladd otherwise that's a hard pass.

They also have a ton of guys to re-sign or replace. Lee/Nelson/Eberle/Filppula are all UFA's. Beau/MDC are RFA's. That's exactly half of the forwards. Barzal/Pulock/Toews need deals the summer after. They do have a lot of wiggle room, but it's not like they have the core locked up for years and can spend money on whatever they want.

I'd give them Ladd with $1M retained and a 2020 3rd or Bailey if they retained $1M on Kovy's deal. Not much else.

I'm not sure how much he has left? I'd rather go into the playoffs with the current team then Kovy being the only deadline move.
