He's been A LOT better this season. He is playing responsible 2-way hockey, which is more important than going into an occasional scoring drought. I agree that his history is that of someone who starts fast, then disappears in the 2nd half, but as long as his line is scoring more goals than it is giving up, then he's worth re-signing.........regardless of whether his future is as a 2C or a 3C.

Of course, I would feel better if Lou re-signed him sooner rather than later.

I agree that he has been better playing 2 way hockey but he still disappears at times and takes shifts off. Less than years past but that could be contract year. It could be coach too..... I would love to sign him at a 3C price. I just don't want to pay him as a top 6 guy. Despite his slightly better effort this year He is not going to win a Selke any time soon.

Listen I’m not saying sign the guy now or give him a huge raise but his play is not slightly better. He has been consistently good the entire season.

I think Nelson has been much better this year. I still think his best spot is 3C. I'd like to give him a 3 year deal. Longer type deals should be reserved for special type players.

So I just googled this and, what do you know, there are some things that google is not much help with. Seriously, what would you pay Nelson? Considering the Isles' lack of C depth, I think you have to give him at least what Bailey gets. $5 MM over 5 seasons.

Yep that’s what he’ll most likely get if they decide to sign him.

That's probably around what it ends up being, but it'll be kinda funny that they gave Bailey that deal after a 71pt season and Nelson is probably going to get something similar and is on pace for about ~50pts

And I'd like to trade for McDavid for a bag of pucks. This is Nelson's big chance for a big payday. I doubt he's re-signing for only 3 years.

If points were all that mattered, I would agree with the irony. But, as I said, Nelson is playing a more important position, the Isles lack depth at that position, and he's playing better 2-way hockey.

My biggest concern with Nelson is what nite mentioned; i.e., this is Nelson's walk year. If you sign him long-term, does he disappear for the next several years? Obviously, I hope not, and, as you said, with (finally) a real good coach, I don't think he'd get away with it.

I just hate giving out long term deals and especially to players like Bailey and Nelson. Longest contracts should be 5 years for all players.

He will still be paid so he will be getting away with it. Barry has been great but what has been done to Bailey with all his turnovers?

If Nelson signs for 5 mill a year I would be very happy with that price. I think he will be looking for more.. but at 5 mill a year sign me up.

That's why I agree with you. It's just funny though.

I'd say the closest comparable to Nelson is Carl Soderberg, who's AAV is $4.75M but he signed a few years ago. I'd say Nelson getting $5M-$5.25M AAV is about where he'll be at.

True but the last 5 games I have seen some of the Old Nelson on shifts. I hope he comes back flying around the ice again. We had discussed at length this summer that this was the age guys like Okposo started to finally click and yes so far Nelson has been better than previous years. let's hope he continues to improve.
