I'm curious how many players went from their entry level deals to a mega deal like that? Not saying it hasn't happened but I can see like you said a shorter bridge deal before getting that huge deal especially if cap space is going to be an issue in the next couple of years
- Vukota

I think the bridge deal days are largely dead. Subban wrecked that for everyone. I think it's cheaper now to just pony up the money up-front and have it become "cheaper" as the cap slowly rises over the life of the deal.

The Isles could, hypothetically, lock him up for 8 years at $12M now...or pay him something like $8M-$9M now for 3-4 years and then have to pay him some ridiculous amount down the road. I think the delta between what a bridge deal would cost now vs. just paying him his market value now is relatively-minimal, but the gap in a bridge deal now vs. paying him market value in, say, 3-5 years could be significant.

I'm not saying a bridge deal now is stupid or out of the question and, you have a point, that the cap situation currently may dictate that. But I think, conceptually, teams risk shooting themselves in the foot (or the wallet?) by giving bridge deals to superstar youngsters.

edit: For clarity, I meant that I think the bridge deal days are dead for established young star players

Makes sense I guess but I still don't see him getting paid 12 million a year as of now. I'm thinking more like 8-10 million a year. Doesn't McDavid make 12 mil a year? I do realize the pay scale increases each year obviously but I still think 12 is a bit much

A players prime is now 20 to 25 so yeah lock them up early and then hope to sign a shorter deal after

Speaking hypothetically of course, but from Barzal's standpoint he could sign a big dollar deal for 8 years now and then he'd still only be 30 (assuming he signed this summer when he's eligible) when it expired. There would still be another mega deal available then, too.

Maybe I'm over accounting for the pay scale rising, but I'm also thinking that if they sign Panarin for $11M that'd it'd be tough to sign Barzal for less. Obviously it's a business and these guys can't get too butthurt over that kind of stuff, but still.

How so? No way a kid at 20 is going to be developed and polished at 20-22 then he would be at 25-26 years old. Just from a body standpoint alone that doesn't make sense. Liquid lunch again?

Barzal is not getting 12 mil a year in his next deal.

No he won’t. I’m thinking he’ll sign an Eichel like deal.

Sabres vs Blue Jackets tonight who do you root for? Me personally I'd rather Blue Jackets win and further separate the playoff teams from the non playoff teams and then battle for division spots the last month or so. You guys?

Used to be 25 to 28 but the players themselves were saying that at the allstar game champ. Kane Crosby ect

I'm aware of strength but the point was the kids are so fast and skilled coming in that they are ready as teenagers to contribute and get acclimated quicker. Their prime being younger was specifically talked about
