Adam Proteau: Knights' expansion draft strategy wisely prioritizes value of defensemen
Las Vegas Golden Knights GM George McPhee and his management team selected the core of their roster for the franchise's inaugural season in 2017-18, and wisely focused on amassing a deep group of defensemen. That strategy likely won't yield impressive results right away, but given the value of blueliners in today's NHL, it's the best way to slowly build a championship contender.

Except instead of taking the most valuable defensemen,
they made (mostly) mediocre deals
Ended up picking defensemen with no upside & limited trade value,
Instead of taking a youngster with potential
Example:
Emelin over Hudon
McPhee blows
