What offseason? The expansion draft is June 21st and last season Game 6 of the finals was June 12.

The offseason is where teams are optimistic of their youth, the draft and free agency, so rather than pay a big price for Hansen, they will wait to see how those play out rather than help Vancouver out. Not to mention, everyone else will be cautious of contracts they add and potentially lose, who has a protection spot for Hansen prior to the draft?

At $2.5m next year with the cap standing pat & we have cap space is nothing?

Hamhuis for a... nothing? oh damb, that seems to have gone wrong
- neem55

Last year Hamhuis waited until the TDL to waive and then Benning got seriously low-balled. The would have been mass hysteria if he was traded for a 4th or 5th (As rumoured). Vrbata provided a garbage list of 8 teams. Garbage list. People blaming Benning for that are idiots.

Yeah Hansen's not really a draft day trade kind of player. That's more for guys like Tanev.
- golfingsince

He's the jolt you want before a playoff push. Big name/impact guys like Tanev you want from the beginning of the season

yes to a certain extent but i do put some blame on benning for waiting until the last minute to figure out where the players' heads are at.

why couldn't (can't) he approach players and their agents in the summer and say that they are not looking to trade said player but if x,y, or z transpire during the first half of the season, i'm going to be looking at trading players (possibly you.) have those players with their agents be ready for that possibility seems like prudent business to me.

waiting until the last minute especially with vrbatta who had a pregnant wife seems like a lesson in futility. vrbatta even said that he gave a list that wouldn't work but he would have had a different attitude if he was asked about it in the summer.

Standing pat means you likely lose one of Sven or Granlund. You know, one of the 80ish NHL players that are under 25 years old and on pace for 20 goals? This team doesnt score very often and are rebuilding so it seems like a priority to keep them

I am one of those saying the TDL is the best time to trade Hansen.
Keeping him cuz signed for 1 more season means other moves r made.
Another TDL will come along for another opportunity.
Position of weakness hardly. U say declining when a Ladd gets a 1st & flops.
Teams make many moves for cup or PO runs.

- Nighthawk

When Ladd was moved, he was coming off of his best season. He has been declining since then, which is why it was a great move by Winnipeg. Trade an older guy while he still has value.

You could for sure make an argument for keeping Granlund considering how he has improved...but guys like Sven who are super streaky and soft (for the most part) I don't think we are going to win with long-term. No matter if he scores 20 or not.

Cuz a players boss doesn't run his team thru players & their agents.
Why put a player in a position of uncertainty all season & have it affect his season & prolly devalue him further?

Maybe he did approach them in the summer. Vrbata made his on bed by pouting through an entire season, lowering his stock and Hamhuis, publicly, made it pretty clear that he did not want to waive. I give Benning a pass because we don't know what happened behind the scenes or when.

I looked at Sven's game by game log of the past 2 seasons and he has actually been extremely consistent in his point production. His goals do come in bunches though.

That being said, I would be more inclined to develop him further and explore a better deal down the road than hang onto Hansen who's contract is up after next season and will be asking for more money

Low-balled was a 3rd. That was the offer. Like I said, I would have taken it. I'm not blaming anyone. I'm saying: if you can get a 2nd for Hansen, that's a pretty good deal IMO so you take it. If you can get a 1st for Tanev, you take it. Why? Is that under value? possibly. I'm all in favor for getting more. In my mind, it gives us 2 2nd rounders and 2 1st rounders going into the draft. This team is bad. We need those picks. It also allows us to cover our asses at the expansion draft and keep our players, which also has value. Do we trade other players at the TDL next year? Of course, we will still be bad. But losing players for nothing? Letting guys get older and value decrease? Not trading them while they have value? I'm tired of that poop.

I'm pretty certain Hansens future is not here & he is moved.
When or for what idk but it will happen.

To me he's worth a second round pick, maybe a project prospect or another low round pick thrown in. He had a career year at 30 and just had a season of shoulder and knee injuries, no one will trade for him thinking he will play top 6
- WhiteLie

Valuations can be pretty fluid thing....he may be worth a 1st and a prospect if Vancouver was willing to take a bad contract back for instance . But the move has to be at the deadline to maximize return. That or get comfortable with keeping Hansen and be prepared to say goodbye to Sven Granlund or Sbisa....for nothing. # asset management

my problem at its base is the rebuild/retool fissure. it seems that retool means that decisions such as TDL moves are left to the very last minute b/c they honestly believe they can make the playoffs and compete.

accept reality and talk with the vets about moving them. these are grown men. you can have respectful grown up conversations about trading them even if they have NTCs. just don't wait until the day before (hyperbole).

If Tanev gets a 1st at TDL? Fetches at least that for sure.
Why only get picks? R there no prospects out there who r better?
Next season we r scaring nobody & its a growth year once again.

When did standing pat at the TDL with poor offers mean everything is written in stone without other options later on?
- Nighthawk

Ok so you said that the best deals come at TDL, but if the offer is a 2nd round pick you would wait it out in the offseason.

I asked, "what offseason?" as there is only a 2 week window from the Stanley Cup Finals and the expansion draft. I also pointed out that other teams are also concerned about protecting players and I cannot think of any that would bother acquiring Hansen only to risk losing him.

You replied with "At $2.5m next year with the cap standing pat & we have cap space is nothing?"

I struggled to comprehend the sentence, but my best guess was that you were suggesting we have the cap space to hold onto Hansen, so I commented that the expansion draft kinda prevents them from holding onto Hansen without losing someone else
