This week I teared up in public for the first time since I was nine. That time, it was after committing three errors in one inning. This time, it was while walking through Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick, a predominantly Hispanic Brooklyn neighborhood. A lot of these people are Puerto Rican, but a lot of them aren’t. Some fear deportation, and more are close to someone who does.

I’ve walked through this park more times than I can count. In the summer, it was a Normanrockwellian portrait of America, a Real American ideal that rarely exists in Real America anymore. On Sundays, there were little kids dressed to the nines, roughing up their church shoes, playing some variant of tag I’ve been out of the game for too long to understand. Volleyball games attracted crowds of a couple hundred people. Bands showed up and played. Skaters were pulling kickflips, sometimes successfully, and always, I noticed, a healthy distance from this beautiful mosaic of a bird that’s laid into the ground right in the center of the park. Old folks sat on the benches and talked and sat and watched. One day my girlfriend and I went there to shoot hoops. We sucked, and were joined by this guy who didn’t speak a word of English and also sucked. We spent almost an hour bricking shots and laughing at each other. Please tell me that I’m painting a picture you can see, that I’m doing justice to this. It was gorgeous.

Wednesday, it was dark at five-thirty, because daylight savings time is dumb. I’d spent all day apartment-hunting in the neighborhood, which meant I’d had meaningful conversations with people I wouldn’t have otherwise had. The subway cars were morgues. On both cars I rode, at least one person was crying. A mostly-quiet train isn’t unusual, but a completely quiet car in rush hour is something I’d never experienced. Where and when else, in this time, could you sit in a room with fifty other people in absolute silence? You don’t go to the library anymore. Even in a city jail’s holding room, there’s muttering. The tracks rattled and the brakes squeaked and nobody spoke in this moving electric basement.

I walked through that park, my chest full of the numbers and all the commas that littered them and the people who talked to me and the empty faces of the people who didn’t need to. It was chilly and dark. A few people were sitting on benches and saying nothing. It was as though the weather and the dark and the hatred turned the park upside-down and shook all the joy out of it. That’s when I started to cry. No one saw me.

The park is named after Maria Hernandez, who dedicated her life to evicting drug dealers in the neighborhood, the exact line of work Trump supporters would applaud. One day in 1989, she walked in front of her living room window, and she was shot to death.
