Hedman WILL win Norris trophies. He is a beast out there. You can mention him along with Keith, Weber or Doughty and he'd have nothing to be embarassed about.

Yeah, he was the fourth name I almost threw in there.

EDIT - Doesn't really change the point though.

we might lose a guy or two but I don't think it will be as bad as the blackhawks. If vasy proves to be a good number one goalie maybe you deal bishop after next season. teams will for sure line up to take bishop! carle trade or buyout! maybe not resign Coburn! kucherov is the tricky one he could ask for 6 million a season!

I agree that it's probably a name or two, not a total roster overhaul. That could still be impactful, though.

Getting out from under Carle's contract is key, IMO.

Filppula will hopefully be a tradable asset.

Callahan's contract is the elephant in the room, if you're asking me.

Very nice blog Michael, you are hundred percent dead on. I hope not to jinx Kucherov but he reminds me very much of Pavel Datsyuk when he broke into the league with the Wings. Pavel was much older than Nikita but the similarities are undeniable.

If the Hawks can't move Sharp word is that Crawford is a gone.

Also sounds like the have agreements with Kruger and Oduya but
they have to move a body or 2 first.

BTW great article about cap casualties from a Hawks fan.

I agree but most certainly will be Sharp. He is probably gonna go pretty cheap though.

Thanks!

It's funny to go back and read the scouting reports about Kucherov's "lack of defensive awareness." The guy has a 200-foot game. Cooper's message has reached him loud and clear.

As an outsider who admittedly did not watch the Lightning game in-game out all year until the SCF, I believe you have to show the same type of commitment to Hedman that the Hawks have shown to Toews and Kane. That guy is really unbelievable.

I would have to weigh the $$$ on Stamkos. Depends what he is seeking next contract. He is a tremendous goal scorer and it seemed as though he upped his physicality in the playoffs, which is fine because I'm not sure you want him playing that way for the first 82 due to the injury risk. If cap stays the same, I think anything north of 10 mil would give me pause due to the emergence of the Triplet line. You're gonna have to pay them more eventually.

Finally, I think if Bishop wants a big raise next contract I'd roll with Vasilevsky.

Tampa needs to get better 3-6 on D. Need to spend to upgrade there.

Just the thoughts of an outsider to be taken with a grain of salt.

True but you can get a bigger return on Crawford now and try trading Sharp at the deadline in the spring for needed pieces and possibly better return.

I really agree with the message in your post.

Agree completely on Hedman.

Bishop will be gone after his contract expires, I think.

As for the defence, I think the pairings were more of an issue than the players themselves. Carle-Sustr was an unmitigated disaster. That needs to change. And then there are players coming up like Koekkoek and DeAngelo (who looks fantastic).

callahan, filppula, coburn and carle are really the only annoying pieces on the roster right now. coburn, prospal, ohlund, gagner all come off the books next season so there will be room for stammer and kucherov. replacing coburn and carle with koekkoek and deangelo we will be set.

unless the Hawks are out of the playoff picture at the trade deadline (unlikely) they are not going to trade away significant players. They are in win now mode and would just keep the player and try to win a cup. The problem is they can't carry his salary over into the season. If they could then they wouldn't need to trade him. Also it's almost impossible to trade large contracts in the middle of the season because very few contending teams have the cap space to do it.

bishop i dont think will be back if he wants any more of a raise north of 6 mill per. id be fine running with vasi and gudlevskis. stammer will get 8 years 80 mill. maybe with a signing bonus or something. i think he realizes too big of a contract cripples a team. 10 mill should be the max.

It's a day in age where no one player can play for one team anymore. Even if he says he wants to, he'll also say he wants X amount of money.

I think filppula and carle move maybe even garrison also down the line. Callahan stays I think due to he can play on really any line.

The STAMKOS contract will destroy the team. Much better off being deep than having elite players at that cost. Chicago will also not win the cup again with those two contracts that kick in this year. Managers will soon see with these examples that it's better, although not popular, to trade these guys for multiple talented assets before the huge contract kicks in. Tampas window is the next two years.........after that, with STAMKOS, they are done.
