the other issue is what if it's slashed, causing the break,as it initially appeared here (though Abdelkader broke it himself)? shouldn't there be an exception to the rule? down the rabbit hole.

yeah, that was such BS! Ref didn't even want to talk with the other ref and linesmen to see if they had seen the broken stick play! Goal should have been waived off AND Abdelkader should've had a 2 min penalty on top of it! ...and then the Blues would've won!

I think this was just a missed call. The ref should have called a penalty which would have disallowed the goal.

The player who slashed it should be called on a delayed penalty, making a goal scored on the play count. I think.

No player slashed it.he broke it on Allen's pads himself. Fail all around for the NHL. I feel bad if a team in the east misses the playoffs by one point.

It reminded me a little of the Brett Hull 'foot in the crease' winning goal.

Because it was an overtime winning goal everybody is rushing off the bench, leaving the ice, etc and there is no real attempt to slow it down and make sure we have it right.

If this had happened in the third period I bet the officials would have huddled, asked if anybody saw when the stick broke, etc.

They definitely got it wrong. I wonder if taking a little more time, even if it was not a 'reviewable play' by the war room, might not have got the call correct.

The rule doesn't need to say the goal is disallowed, because the instant the player plays the puck with a broken stick there is intent to blow the whistle (well, should be) meaning the play is dead. A puck going into the net after a whistle/intent to blow the whistle is covered in other areas of the rulebook as not counting, is it not?

First, it wasn't slashed, so not applicable here.

Hypothetically though, a slash breaking a stick creates a delayed penalty; then playing the puck with a broken stick creates an instant whistle; no goal is scored and both teams get minor penalties, one for the slash and the other for playing the puck with a broken stick.
In most games, NHL refs will then call a second phantom penalty on whoever slashed the stick so the other team still gets a powerplay, but that's refs calling their feel of the game, not the actual rules.
