I think it goes to show that some people just need their opportunity to shine and they can really show what they're capable of. This is a great example why the Pens dont need Kane, Eberle, Ryan etc....

Supposedely Ohie & Steen are on the market. I would take Oshie in a minute. Can play center and winger. What would it cost the pens to acquire one of those guys?

Depends. STL has a boatload of young guys they will need to resign in the near future. It could be a cap dump for prospects.

Just saw that Ducks signed Bryz for $2.88!! That's on top of his $1.25/yr until 2020 that he still gets from the Flyers. Ducks seem to have over paid for him especially with Gibson starting to skate again. Odd move.

27 years old
Oshie has been a 50 point player once, and a 60 point player once. This year he has 20 games and 8 points. Oshie 4.175 for 2 years after this season

30 years old
Steen has been a 50 point player once, and a 60 point player once as well. This year 26 gp 16 points. 5.8 for 2 years after this season

I would rather have Oshie, younger guy with less cap hit. Oshie is over-hyped and would also cost more. I'm not sure what it would take to get him honestly. All the typical trades we offer is what I'm guessing. Martin, prospects, picks combinations

Hard to compare Comeau and Sykora for so many reasons. For one, Sykora was a one trick pony, his shot. Second, Sykora was benched for a large chunk of those 2009 playoffs because he wasn't playing well, and then whined about it.

And was there a market for him? I never understood why you'd pay that much for a player who no one else seems to want.

Sykora >>> Comeau. Not even close. He had a history in the league already with NJ and Anaheim.

They plan to send Gibson down for the rest of the year so he can play, odd move indeed.

Oh, definitely. Sykora was highly skilled. But didn't offer much besides that great shot.

Seriously, What kind of bargaining power did Bryz have?

League minimum - take it or leave it.......

Does the NHL have the same rule as the NFL where your league min is based off your tenure?

I don't think so. I didn't even know this rule in the NFL.

Exactly, its not like there were teams fighting for his services.

I saw that too. I don't get it? Spend 2.88 on a guy who has been average at best instead of playing the cheap rookie who is suppose to be your future. I understand you don't want to screw up the Gibson by throwing him to the wolves but play him and Anderson 60:40 with Anderson getting 60.

Yeah this was some time ago. There was a NFL punter at my gym that had retired, but basically he said he would sign with any team for the league min, but since he played for like 15 yrs, and his last contract paid so much, no team was willing to pay an old punter the amount he was guaranteed. This was maybe 10 yrs ago.

So since no one has really brough up the Cap projection of $73M next season & as I'm bored/love Cap Geek...

CapGeek Armchair GM Roster
FORWARDS
Beau Bennett ($0.925m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Patric Hornqvist ($4.250m)
Chris Kunitz ($3.850m) / Evgeni Malkin ($9.500m) / Free Agent ($4.000m)
Blake Comeau ($1.250m) / Brandon Sutter ($3.300m) / Pascal Dupuis ($3.750m)
Nick Spaling ($2.200m) / Marcel Goc ($1.300m) / Steve Downie ($1.150m)
Jayson Megna ($0.850m) /

DEFENSEMEN
Kris Letang ($7.250m) / Olli Maatta ($0.894m)
Simon Despres ($0.900m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($5.500m)
Derrick Pouliot ($0.863m) / Scott Harrington ($0.589m)
Rob Scuderi ($3.375m) / Robert Bortuzzo ($0.850m)

GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.750m)
Thomas Greiss ($1.200m)
BONUS OVERAGE
$0
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2015-16)
SALARY CAP: $73,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $72,196,667; BONUSES: $732,500
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $803,333

A few assumptions I made:

(1) 13F / 8D / 2G roster. $800K in Cap Space left over for call-ups & whatnot.

(2) Dupuis does not retire & comes back from the blood clot issue. If not, this frees up $3.750M for his replacement.

(3) All RFA's (Bennett, Megna, Bortuzzo) are tendered & given slight raises, except Megna (whose tender is suprisingly high at $917K next season) & Dumoulin who could be traded for a younger W.

(4) Only internal UFA's are used, but aside from Ehrhoff, all others (Comeau, Goc, Downie, Greiss) could be substitiuted with comparable personnel without much difference in my mind.

I'd target (i) Frolik, (ii) Fologino, and (iii) Tulusty as the 2nd line W Free Agent.
