I'm on the same page and even if the Mania card isn't looking the best it might surprise. The potential is there. They have an excellent opportunity to showcase actual up and comers instead of part timers with all the injuries.

I think Mania will deliver. Everything up until then will likely be just ok

Mania is usually always well done, if unspectacular at moments

I'm trying to find a bookie so I can bet an over/under on what they fake announce the attendance as. Seats 80k, but with floor seating I feel like they'll claim like 105

Trying to wheel one of the older sisters on the team I'm part time coaching. She's 19 (phew!) and does fit stuff. Also looks kind of dirty but not really.

As for coaching itself, the team isn't doing so well and the HC is acting like he's going to be fired and sent down to Novice B or something.

I think it has to do with his dumb "system" idea where there are imaginary "power lanes" he wants to the team create chances from instead of a simple cycle. These kids are like 11-12(?).

Its a system I remember my 1st or 2nd year Midget coach wanted us to use but it was plain ineffective. A lot of his stuff is for older/more advanced hockey.

The defensive zone faceoff formation is terrible too. He lines them up with no one behind the center. W-W-D-C-D across the hashmarks, but the kids aren't fast enough on defence and the winger that is a mile away from his position usually ends up just kind of lost in the middle of the ice.

On the bright side the goalie is making leaps and bounds this season because he's getting like 35-40 shots a game.

He asked a kid after a shift if he "even knew which power lane" he's "supposed to shoot from"? ://////////////////////

The only time I've seen these "power lanes" work is if you're playing against a team that plays a zone defence in its own end, a concept that is far too complicated for kids to understand.

And even then, most zone defences collapse around the net and getting the puck through requires the shooter to have his head up, probably take some heat off, and make sure it gets through. That is a concept that kids don't understand

They're kids for (frank)s sake. Just cycle and try to get the other team running around. Experience doing that is going to help them a hell of a lot more down the road than confusing the poop out of them now. Probably get way better results too.

The cycle is still the best offensive system and it hasn't changed. Minor hockey, Junior, Pro or beer league. Doesn't matter.

The Sedins, Crosby, Backstrom-Winger cycle to draw the defence off Ovechkin, Oilers do it to set up a cross crease to Eberle or Hall, the Flames Backlund-Frolik-Whoever line has done some monster cycles. Its so easy to do and its so good.

We used it when I was 12. We'd skate circles around the other team and usually get a damn good chance out of it.

As for the "its kids", these parents don't understand. When I helped during evaluations they were insufferable. They'd walk over to where you're sitting and talk REALLY LOUD ABOUT HOW GREAT JIMMY IS AND HOW HE'S ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER BECAUSE I'M SO RICH I PAID 1200 FOR INDEPENDENT SKATING LESSONS SO HE'S ONLY GONNA GET EVEN BETTER AND I BOUGHT HIM THE SKATES THAT ARE WAY TOO STIFF FOR HIM BECAUSE THEY WERE THE MOST EXPENSIVE

Had a team I was helping with a couple years ago where we had one kid whose parents would, before every shift, film the clock, then his shift, then the clock again when the shift ended, and then turn the camera off until his next one.

He was 10 and he had no awareness of what was going on around him at any moment but, you know, 10, so whatever, everybody got about the same icetime.

His parents came and showed us the tape and complained that he wasn't getting enough time. Coach's response was to tell them that with their camera work they were overestimating his icetime by about 2 seconds each shift.

One thing I like about this coach is he is really fair with ice time. No favourites. Rolls lines on pp and pk. Only time he gets picky is score close late in games. Lie getting a better face off guy out there on our zone or getting at least 1 of the better scorers out down a goal but that's only like in the last minute

I like talking shop re: coaching

As much as I complain I do enjoy it.

I was working with one kid on how to stick check properly. Told him to get underneath the opponents stick instead of coming over top. He did it the other day and saved a would-be goal on a rebound
