Interesting article. Kind of proves what I've said all along about Fleury, he makes the "great" saves because he is out of position and needs to use his athleticism.

It was also interesting seeing the disconnect between the home plate save percentage and salary.

I've got my hopes up for Greiss....

Fascinating stuff. I wonder how much of this is skewed by the variance of what constitutes a "shot" (i.e., scorers in each building count shots differently, especially stuff chances in the crease).

Thought 2: if the percentages are that different, I would tell my team to never take a shot from outside that region again.

Interesting article, I'm a sucker for a new stat, the player still has to pass the eye test with me but I think it's niave not to use all available information when trying to make a descion. The stat needs to be weighed correctly, which most likely is the hardest part but needs to be included in gathering info on player.

I think the names at the top of the HPSP statistic show just how silly this stat is.

Way too many variables in play here to glean anything meaningful from this.

I wonder how many goals scored out of this home plate area go in as result of a redirect, or a bouncing puck all over the crease and someone bangs in the rebound. Goals like those should not be contributed to bad goaltending. It is my belief that the Pens D hasn't done a very good job in front of the net.

Dude people have been saying that about great goaltending saves since the existence of the position.

This is true.. A lot of times you see a flurry of shots/rebounds from the front of the net, and they are only counted as one or two shots.

Thought 2: if the percentages are that different, I would tell my team to never take a shot from outside that region again.

But many of the shots from this area started from outside.... either redirected from someone in front, or a rebound.

Though it's different it's still old. When does the prospect tournament start?

Sutter should obviously be playing ahead of Fleury... hes got zero goals let in from the home plate area.

This is most likely MAF's last year as a Pen and maybe as a starter. It's unfortunate, he is a likeable guy but I think it's time.

Braden Holtby continues to quietly, yet efficiently, go about his business. The Capitals traded for Halak last year but perhaps their focus should have been in other areas.

it wasn't that simple. Holtby had a very poor first half of the year, but managed to reel it in and played stellar the second half. Bringing in Halak was a good decision, and a much better decision than pulling the trigger on Miller, but it wasn't going to be enough to right the ship, that's for sure.

Exactly, he makes easy shots look hard. Considering he relies so much on his reflexes, I would suspect that his decline will be early and rapid. And, still, he has a job in the NHL...

I would second the recommendation that the Hockey Abstract is well worth the money.

MAF has difficulty holding position, I believe and he is vulnerable up high. I think he has great reflexes and athletic ability but he is a nervous Nelly who goes down early, has trouble handling the puck and is generally overreacting to the play. This 'home plate' chart is frustrating to think about for him to be the lead goalie.
