Let me start off by saying that just because I propose the trade and remark is as logical, does not mean it is going to happen by means. I am not holding myself out as someone who knows anything on the inside. This deal, to me, just seems like a win-win for both clubs and works within the salary cap.
TO FLORIDA PANTHERS
C Nazem Kadri ($2.9 million to 2015-16)
D Jake Gardiner (RFA)
D Dion Phaneuf ($7 million to 2021-22)
8TH OVERALL DRAFT PICK IN 2014
TO TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS:
C Nick Bjugstad ($900,000 to 2015-16)
D Erik Gudbranson (RFA)
D Brian Campbell ($7.14 million to 2016-17)
1ST OVERALL DRAFT PICK IN 2014
Now, let's take a deep breath before throwing out those harsh replies. The Campbell and Phaneuf contracts cancel each other out, at least for the first 2 years. Both teams are able to reshape their respective defensive units, which is the huge point of this deal, as the Leafs would undoubdtly draft Aaron Ekblad #1 with that pick. I know I am a Leafs fan, but I feel like this deal is rather equal and fair to both sides. If anyone is asking themselves, why would Florida ever give up Bjugstad, well, they have Huberdeau and Barkov up the middle already.
