I have to say, I don't think I would have tendered Manning if I was the Flyers. I did read somewhere that they were required to tender Wellwood, which I wouldn't have done unless it was required.

I agree with Manning. With Wellwood, I think they want to retain his rights, and if they didn't tender him a QO, he would become a UFA.

Bill, this means that Steven Delisle doesn't count against the 50 limit since it's a minor league deal?

No. He won't count until actually signed.

IMO, if Manning is capable of coming up to fill in at the NHL level -- although I don't want to pigeonhole a player, I have a feeling that the AHL-NHL swingman role is what he'll be rather than a full-time NHLer -- then he was worth tendering.

Correct. Delisle doesn't count against the 50 limit. He's also ineligible for an NHL callup (but that would be a pretty big stretch at this point to say he'd otherwise be a candidate even if the Flyers have as many blueline injuries as they did last season).

They need to make the flight plan a weekly show, it was a disappointment that it wasn't on last week.

Bill, any news on whether they are going to trade a defenseman this off season?

IMO, if Manning is capable of coming up to fill in at the NHL level -- although I don't want to pigeonhole a player, I have a feeling that the AHL-NHL swingman role is what he'll be rather than a full-time NHLer -- then he was worth tendering.

I agree that he's likely going to top out as a swing guy, and it's not really anything against that type of guy, but I really dislike the way this team utilizes their allocation of NHL contracts.

The only real reason to make the QO is the doubt over the ability of the defense to remain healthy. Timonen is a warrior, but he gets dinged up. Meszaros' injury history has been well covered. Grossmann is hardly an ironman. Gustafsson has been bothered by the nagging stuff, as well.

I just feel that with Gervais, Bourdon and Lauridsen that a guy like Manning isn't a huge need.

It's not required to tender any player. But if a Qualifying Offer to a RFA is not made, that player becomes a UFA.

I'm not positive Bill, but I beleive once a Qualifying offer is made, he counts against the 50 contracts.

It will be interesting to see if he is able to return to the ice by the February timetable that has been suggested and be effective. If he doesn't lose his speed, he could be a nice option for the third and fourth lines down the stretch run.

I thought he was declared out for the year. If it's possible he can return by February I don't have an issue with bringing him back. His entire game is predicated on his speed, so if he's even lost half a step it would be a big blow as he's a fringe NHL player at best.

You may be thinking about the fact that, if he's signed, he has to remain on the NHL roster/cap due to his injury.

I think Gervais is a decent depth 6/7 type d-man. I mean most teams don't have guys much better than him in that spot on their depth chart.

The problem was due to all the injuries, Gervais was exposed in the role he was asked to fill.

Gervais is scary sometimes to watch. He does have good passing ability, but it's his defensive posturings that I don't trust.

I would be hard pressed to be able to name a single player in Flyers History who has achieved more, become so beloved by the fans, or became such a big part of the Philly area community than Lappy in such a miniscule amount of time playing. I wish we had the pleasure of him for his whole career and not just a short sample, I feel almost cheated.

Agreed, if you limit him to 10-12 minutes and can get favorable matchups, he's manageable. Any more than that and you start having issues.

I would be hard pressed to be able to name a single player in Flyers History who has achieved more, become so beloved by the fans, or became such a big part of the Philly area community than Lappy in such a miniscule amount of time playing. Toughest player I've ever seen. And that has nothing to do with his ability to fight. He's right behind Jason Smith (3 rounds of the playoffs with 2 separated shoulders) as the toughest competitors I've ever seen. But Lappy has cemented himself in the area light years past Smith.
