As far as I'm concerned, everyone at the top of this draft is worth trading up for (assuming the asking price isn't too steep).

Three players: Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin and Seth Jones. That's it.

I might go to four and add Barkov.

I'd have no prob w/ them making such a move to add a new dynamic to the lineup. They've pretty much nailed the two way center that we have to move to the wing half the time. Nice asset to have, but getting a barkov or nichuskin would stir the mix in a positive way, IMO.

If they can trade down and get Robert Hagg and add another pick, I'd be very happy with that outcome.

I'd rather see the Flyers stay at 11 in order to get a high-grade prospect, instead of trading alll the way down to mid 20s in order to get 3 medium-grades. We need a replacement plan for Kimmo (And/or Pronger, for that matter) and I don't think drafting 3 medium-level guys is at all better for that plan than getting Pulock.

Exactly. I'd try for Pulock. We need offence and puck-moving ability.

Thank you for so clearly illustrating the BPA approach in the Coburn/Carter comparison.

Shea Weber was taken 41 picks after Braydon Coburn in 2003. The draft is a crap shoot, defensemen especially so.

I do agree that dropping to 25 to add a couple of 2nd rounders is more than I'd prefer dropping, but it's not a bad idea because the Flyers need organizational depth as much, if not more, than they need a Timonen replacement right now.

Pulock isn't going to step in and replace Timonen in a year's time. To expect him-or anyone drafted this June to do so-is asking them to fail.

but if the org feels that pulock is worth more than a chance at a couple of gusty or McGinn types, depth is less important than talent...even if it takes longer to benefit from it.

It's an even more apt comparison because they got 180 goals out of Carter before peddling him off for Schenn (5th-overall) and Simmonds (61st-overall), AND they ended up getting Coburn anyway in return for Zhitnik.

That's proper drafting and asset management in a nutshell.

True, if Pulock is even there at 11. I'd prefer trying to do a deal with Columbus, to get a 2 1st rounder, say trading the 11th & 41st picks to get Columbus' 1st rounder and either the Rangers or Kings 1st as well.

I strongly agree that the only reason to trade up is to get Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin or Barkov. Trading up to get Nurse or similar guy is trading a couple of old $1 dollar bills for a nicer, newer $1 dollar bill

The other aspect is, the Flyers have organizational needs at every position. They have one solid goalie prospect, a handful of ok defense prospects, one really good center prospect and a bunch of 3rd/4th liners on the wings.

Most of the young talent, especially up front, is on the roster now.

Yeah... people see the immediate need on D and tend to ignore the fact that the cupboard has been pretty much picked clean.

What they absolutely cannot afford is coming up empty in any of the upcoming series of drafts... it's almost essential that they have a ELC or two ready to plug into the lineup every fall.

Exactly. I like a lot of the guys projected to go between 7-15 in this draft. I'd love to have Pulock, Horvat, Zadorov, Domi, Morrissey or one of the others. But they also need to do a good job with the later picks.

That's one reason I keep mentioning trying to do a deal with the Jackets, and drop to 14. They could get a couple good kids, say Morrissey or Domi at 14 and then maybe have a shot at Dickinson, Fucale, or Hagg in the early to mid-20's.

If you're filling out your hockey calendar -- your sock drawer has no doubt been sorted -- free agency commences on July 5 this year only

If I'm not mistaken, compliance buyout window opens 48 hours after Cup final is over and closes before July 5 free agency begins.

Remember, it's only two compliance buyouts per team - MTL and NYR have each used one already - and CBO permitted this year and next year

Not a bad scenario at all. As long as they have a 1st-rounder this year, I'll be happy. It would just be really disappointing to see them deal it away in some knee-jerk quick-fix.
