its all about the pro experience

Not sure I'll send my kids to hockey unless they beg for it -- no way I can deal with the early mornings

- twiztedmike

I'd imagine you get used to it and my dad really seemed to enjoy watching me. He really helped out. I never did all the insane skating or training programs that other kids did which helped since I preferred playing baseball, soccer and track in my summers. My equipment was usually quite modest since the difference between the upper-mid stuff and the top market stuff is honestly poop that unless you're playing pro you'll never get the benefit from. (outside of sticks but I was never hard on my sticks and they lasted. to this day I still can't use cheapo sticks) But he found enough money to send me to enough camps and trainers that I got to play at a relatively high level quite well. Heck, my last two years of highschool I would be on the ice 10times a week+an off ice session. I would skate a lot at the goalie camps and stuff since they were always looking for shooters and they'd let you out there free. Tons of bonus ice that way.

One day when I have my own Vaggy Jr the Second I'm sure I'll be just as excited to do it for him as long as he's digging it.

love those guys. When he sent me the team budget this year we had more earmarked for our Christmas Party than our entire ice budget.
- dt99999

one of the peewee teams I helped coach was like that. It wasn't even earmarked for the kids christmas party, but for the adults mostly. like they got a keg at someones place, stuck the kids in the basement with an Xbox and got hammered one night.

i'd love to get back into coaching but I just couldn't deal with the psycho parents. The grateful ones and kids made the time worth it, but the psychos really kill it for you.

I've gotten really good at just walking away as soon as a parent starts talking about hockey with me.

yeah i'm thinking next fall i'll call around and see if I can catch on with like a AA or A team. Avoid those AAA parents like the plague. Sneak out the back of the arena after. Show up 10 before ice so I have an excuse not to chat.

i'd recommend the tip about volunteering JR as a shooter for goalie camps in a couple years once he's older. maybe things have changed, but I would get ~35 free hours of ice from August to March doing those.

Great chance to work on shot power, accuracy, mechanics, etc. But have to be old enough to get a bit of discipline in that regard to take it seriously enough as practice time

A is the worst (frank)ing level in hockey.

Brutal.

You get stuck in the (frank)ing blender of the ones who barely made DL and are angry they didn't and the ones who are clueless and are all "hey it's just hockey"

Hmm. poopballs. I was thinking it wouldn't have the crazies because its low enough but you make a great point.

But I think you're going to find those bitter parents at every level. AAA parents who think their kid got personally screwed out of the prep school AAA program. AA parents who think their kid got personally screwed out of the AAA team. Etc.

Probably down to the second level of house.

Haha it does happen sometimes but yeah, not every kid who gets cut is because of it. Since I only got my toes wet at AAA and played a lot of AA, there were a lot of bitter parents for sure convinced it was a conspiracy that their kid who was almost cut from the AA team being kept off the AAA roster.

A guy made my team one year out of camp as a semi surprise after his dad donated a couple G's worth of ice time to the team right before final cuts. Now, the guy he made it over was probably 50-50 with the other guy so it wasn't like the other guy was way better and got the bump.

It was probably worse when I played house league before I finally started to grow. Almost all the parents thought their kids should have been on the AA team.

One time one of the angry parents did evaluations the next year and apparently acted stunned when he ranked his kid as the best skater in camp when every other evaluator had his kid as a first cut.

Apparently that same year the club I played for got a donation from one of the AAA parents and they kept a 15 year old over a 17 year old. Then that 15 year blew out his shoulder in 2 games, didn't play the rest of the year, and the guy they cut went to a different club about 30 minutes away, made the team and apparently had monster games against the team that cut him all year.

One of my Jr B coaches had a hard on for all the kids he coached in club hockey so when they aged into Jr B he cut most of us, 19's and 20's, who never played for him before and the team was so bad for 2 years it almost folded. It sucked extra hard because he waited until we signed our cards for the organization to cut us so we needed an official letter of release to go to new teams. Getting those letters took like 2-3 weeks. I had to go play for a team like 45 minutes away. That sucked.

we cut all that stuff out, we hire an external company to conduct pre-season evaluations so there's a 3rd party looking at it and evaluating players on the ice with a number on their helmet but no name.

AAA stuff is out of our hands it goes to the region anyway and yes up there you definitely have some shenanigans.

but all the local stuff is pretty well managed.

we have a few cases each year where equal talent, you end up plugging in the kid whose parents might coach or manage but that's not politics as much is it's just a product of volunteer orgs where they need volunteers.

That's good. The one I usually would volunteer for is a smaller one out where my parents live so they don't have the extra scrilla to use on evals. I did notive the couple years I did it though that they mostly stopped using parents, at least it seemed that way, and seemed to use mostly non-player-related volunteers.

Do they sit the evaluators away from the parents? The year after I quit they apparently made that change which I would have liked. Hated having parents over my shoulders no matter where I moved in the rink. They would follow.

i remember a few cases of that when i played house. Where a kid would make the team because his dad had the coaching certs from Hockey Canada but it was house and we had 2 B teams so it wasn't like anyone was really getting shafted. We were honestly a little talent short so the kids at the bottom were usually in over their heads anyway.

yeah, the guys just usually sit at the end of the rink or something but everyone knows who they are. evaluations are the worst. if anyone knows you;re a coach you have to literally run in and out of the rink or else you;re mobbed.

you literally only stop to grab a coffee or if a mom is hot.

i used to bring my own travel mug so i could just go straight to my best hiding spot during evals and not have to go to the concession during intermission
