not surprising. In social situations there should be a separate utensil to cut the butter from the END. You then butter your bread with your own knife. Not the same utensil. Its how you avoid having food stuff all over the butter.

i rarely use butter
when i do i have a container of salted whipped in the fridge

i only use sticks for baking

Yes. In multiple toast slice scenarios this could definitely happen. Or in instances where more than one pat goes onto the toast.
