Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Saturday Games; Friday Results; Pelle Lindbergh

Being a man in his mid 40's and a big time Flyers fan during the 80's, I remember this well. Sad day for sure! Man the Flyers had some great teams during the 80's. If it wasn't for the Oilers the Flyers and Flames would have two more Stanley Cups each.

I'm 19 years old. I never saw Pelle play. I never really had a chance to grow "attached" to him as many other Flyer fans have. I've known the story since I was in early grade school. Pelle- the goalie with the funny first name- he died in a car accident. He lost control of his car and ran into a wall. And he didn't make it.

Then, I overlooked it. Another death. It was only semi-important to me because he was a Flyer, and let's face it- the Flyers are important.

As I grew older I grew more understanding- more aware- of what happened. How good he was. How young he was...how much of a tragedy this actually was.

I can't ever relate the way you guys that saw him play can. I can come close, but I'll never be able to truly relate. All I can say is that it is a terribly sad story, and I really do grieve his passing every year. I can't imagine what it was like to watch this unfold in the '85.

I can say this though. I cry every time I read this excerpt. You put the same one on every time, and I well up at the same part twice a year.

I love Elton. He is my inspiration to be a self taught piano player. And those 3 songs they played at Pelle's funeral? I can play them all on the piano. It really hits me hard to read that part.

Here's to #31, Pelle Lindbergh. The goalie I never saw, but who still darkens my 10th day of November every year.

As a 44 year I remember my dad coming down and telling me what had happened over night....we didn't have the Internet back in the day....so I listened every half hour for the sports updates to see if the news some how would get better.....I had an away game that afternoon.....so all the way there me and my dad searched the radio for updates....strangely enough it remains a childhood memory, a very sad one at that....I remember my mother ...a nurse...telling me his injuries were not something someone could survive and just feeling empty...thanks for a great read...it's so appreciated.

Nicely written! I cried too!

I'm only 21. Pelle was before my time. Being a flyers fan since I could crawl, I feel like I knew this man. While he was obviously a special talent, the love and admiration so many still show for him this many years after his death tells me he was an even greater person. RIP

On a side note, I recommend catching some Union College games. Ghostbear is a beast

pelle, the hole you left in my heart has never fully healed. rest in peace.

I drove past last night, as I had to head down Rt. 30 to pick up my son from a birthday party around 9. I had vivid memories of when I first heard the news (I'll not recount it now, but suffice to say the news hit my goalie brother very hard) and new "memories" from Bill's book. I frequently drive Somerdale Road home from my son's games and practices. It always reminds me of Pelle.

Thanks for keeping fans aware of Pelle, Bill.
