My take is only one guy can have the puck at a time. Both Sid and Malkin thrive when they have the puck. Without Sid being there Malkin gets more of the premium ice time and is the guy with the puck more often.

They're usually on separate lines and Malkin gets the same ice time if Crosby is playing or not playing. Malkin usually gets the better quality linemates regardless as well.

But my point is on the power play, late game, when the coach gets killer matchups, etc, it's always Crosby with the puck. All the absolute premium situations for the top player is given to Crosby. And people wonder why Malkin does better when Sid isn't there. It's painfully obvious to me.

Except when Crosby is there he draws the better defensive matchups, or at least splits the time . You'd think that would even things those others things you mention out.

This makes sense, actually. When they are both on PP both seem reluctant to shoot. Whereas, when Crosby is out, guess what, Malkin's gonna shoot and he has a mixed toolbelt. Cannon, wrist shot, deadly backhand, in tight and also able to carry puck through traffic. When he is let free or he just feels free now, it is showing him to be potnent offensively.

Plus, the more he gets a chance to play the role his skills get sharper.
