Although weknow it would never happen that's not a bad deal. Wahsington already has a ton of firepower imagine adding Weber, 2 first, and the rest of the guys.

Crazy Trade #1:
CBJ receives: Gudbranson + Markstrom + 2012 1st + 2012 3rd:
FLA receives: Rick Nash
Rationalization: While it seems weird that a CBJ team that just made trades for Carter and Wiznewski to become competative would trade away Nash, the team is in need of a future Goaltender, and some back-end strength, to actually become competative in the future. FLA on the other hand, gets some elite scoring talent to build on. (obviously would never happen, however, Nash is not being traded from CLB, and MArkstrom is not leaving FLA)
Crazy Trade #2:
TOR receives: RNH + MPS
EDM receives: Schenn + Gardiner + Grabovski + Macarthur + 2012 1st
Rationalization: I have a feeling that neither team would be happy with this trade. Obviously EDM fans don't want RNH to go anywhere (or MPS), and who can blame them. This trade however would help instantly solidy their back-end, alond with giving them some very capable replacements for the forwards they lost. While I can see leaf fans up in arms about giving up so much, I assure you we have the depth to cover it. Let's look at the potential line-ups for both teams.
EDM
Eberle-Grabovski-Hall
Macarthur-Gagner-Hemsky
Omark-Belanger-Smyth
Jones-Horcoff-Hordichuk
Schenn-Whitney
Gardiner-Gilbert
Petry-Barker
TOR
Lupul-RNH-Kessel
MPS-Connolly-Kulemin
Lombardi-Bozak-Armstrong
Brown-Steckel-Dupuis
Phaneuf-Aulie
Liles-Gunnarsson
Komisarek-Franson
2 nice looking line-ups if I do say so my self (preparing for the insults form both EDM and TOR fans... )
Obviously won't happen for many reasons, so you don't have to list them
Crazy Trade #3:
NJ receives: Luongo + Hodgson + 2012 1st
VAN receives: Parise
Rationalization: Personally, I don't think Luongo is going to recover from the fans constant criticism im Vancouver. Schnieder appears to be a very capable goalie, and I have a feeling he could take over the reigns if need be. However, it would be stupid to say that Luongo is done. All he needs is a little less pressure on his shoulders from the media. Both teams benefit from this trade. NJ gets their new Brodeur, plus a valuable prospect, of which Vancouver has no room for with Sedin + Kesler in front of him. The 1st rounder is to just sweeten the deal, as Vancouver doesn't really need it at this point, and Parise would be hard to pry away from NJ. VAN on the other hand gets some extra leadership to try and help out the heart and soul of the team in kesler. Parise would definately provide some additional offense in the playoffs, which si one of the areas that were lacking last year int heir playoff run. |

#1 could work.
#2 is a huge overpayment by Toronto IMO, although I would assume that that's at least what Edmonton fans (GM?) would demand.
#3 I think New Jersey gets ripped off because I really don't trust Luongo's mental game, Hodgson's pedigree. Although, Luongo in the defense-first style of the devils could thrive. |

For #2 - I assumed it would require an overpayment to get a #1 overall pick. Keep in mind, although schenn was a #5 pick, here is what the trade looks like if you factor in what TOR did to get these players:
to EDM: #5 pick, 2nd Rounder + Greg Pateryn (Grabovski), Free Agent Signing (Macarthur), Beauchemin (gardiner), 2012 1st rounder (probably 10th overall)
to TOR: #1 pick, #10 pick
Probably an overpayment, but then again, in order to get the elite talent we would have to trade a lot. #1 overall picks don't get traded for anything less than overpayment (i.e. Lindros)
For #3 - I think that Luongo will resurrect his career. He has been an outstanding goalie in the past, and I think he will continue to be one. All he needs is a new environment, as I don't think any level of good play will get the fans off his back. The only problem may be that VAN themselves has driven his value down so low that they may not get anything for him |

..
How would you NOT be happy with the Edmonton trade? You absolutely rape us in that deal. It leaves us with Grabovski as a top line center. Nobody will win a cup with him as your top line center. How on earth would we get a player of RNHs level of talent again? Oh wait, unless you draft 1st overall YOU DON'T.
RNH is a rare talent and MPS has the potential to be one (guys with his size and speed don't come around often). 2nd liners and stay at home D men aren't hard to come by so if we are going to trade someone like RNH you better believe the best player in the deal coming back would be better than a #4 D man with #2/3 potential. |

With Schenn and Gardiner, do you think we'd need to draft a defenseman with our top 5 pick? Probably not. Even if we needed to pick up another defenseman, we would be drafting twice in the first round, possibly twice in the top 15. With our Top 5 pick we could still draft Galchenyuk or Grigorenko. All in all I don't think the trade is far off value wise. Far fetched yes, but that's the point. |

Schenn and Gardiner do not give us a #1 D man. BEST case scenario they end up as a 3/4 pairing.
Do you think it's smart to give up our future star center and leave us with a huge hole in the middle without addressing the need for a #1 D man?
And where is this top 5 pick coming from you keep talking about? |

The top five pick we'll have at the end of the year from our finishing near the bottom of the standings?
Frankly, if you don't think there's any chance at any time in his career that Luke Schenn could play top pairing minutes with Ryan Whitney, then I don't know what to say.
if 3/4 are schenn and Gardiner's top potential, what are they more likely to end up as in your opinion?
What's hopkins' best and worst case scenario by the way? Or is he a star future #1 centre lock?
Further, don't start with "do you think it's smart...". This is a wacky trade proposal thread. I'm sorry you feel so insulted. |

Hopkins WILL (in my opinion and that of 99% of scouts) be a #1 centre and has star centre potential.
Schenn is a #4 D man right now and will likely be a #3 guy. He has no offensive skill and is too one dimensional to be a top pairing guy. Gardiner isn't even a proven NHLer yet and might end up a #4 guy at best IMO.
If we trade a #1C with star potential it's only logical that we would want a #1 D man with star potential as a MINIMUM.
You don't trade an 18 year old potential franchise centre for "depth" players.

Finding a guy that can provide a lot on D and O is nice, but I find that kind of evaluation of depth doesn't work the same way for D the way it does for forwards and especially centres. If a guy is getting the key defensive zone shifts, shutting down the other teams key players and playing first unit PK the entire season, what does it matter if he logs a minute or two less than other dmen?
Luke Schenn will be a #1 shutdown defender type who will either play 2nd pairing but get a comparable amount of minutes to top pairing (like an Orpik or like Volchenkov was) or will play top pairing and benefit a bit offensively because of it (like Seidenberg).
Not trying to sell you on the trade, but even if the depth chart says 2nd pairing, it's a pretty meaningless designation given his role on the team. |

lmao talk about homerism.. best case 3/4, Schen is already 3, and has the potential to be a #2 on any team. Stop kidding yourself
As for your evaluation, I love your look at prospects.
"MPS has a rare ability of size and speed, you don't see that often", yes I agree, but his POTENTIAL is to become a first line guy. He currently isn't.
Gardiner has the POTENTIAL to become a top pairing D. He currently isn't. He has very nice speed, and very good vision, from what we have seen. He has potential to become a top 4 or even top 2. Will that pan out? Who knows.
Why is it that every oiler player you mention is "A LOCK!" to become what their maximum potential allows. RNH COULD be a franchince centre. He could also become a Daigle, Turris, Kabanov, etc...
Prospects are called prospects for a reason, because you DON'T know how they will turn out. There is risk associated with them. |
