This thread is a goldmine!

Hey prock, if you still lurk in Carols blogs, you should chime in, Canuck fans are approaching 2011 level cockiness…

it goes beyond prospects. Somehow, in their head, Elias Pettersson was a top 5 centre in the NHL. Nevermind he's never broken a point per game and his prodution (point per game), doesn't crack the top 20 yet.

For a rebuilding team, no first round pick in 2 years is a problem.

They have some decent young players, but nothing spectacular. There are quite a few teams with better prospects/youth.

But yeah, all fans tend to get a bit of a woody for their prospects, but Canucks fans take it to next level. The very second Olli Juolevi was drafted, I said it was a mistake, he's nowhere near worth a 5th overall. He played for a stacked Knights team, and still couldn't manage more than 42 points. Virtanen, SHinkaruk, Gaudette, etc, rinse, repeat.

A lot of Canucks fans thought their team would be a top team this past season. Reality is, they're 3 or 4 top young prospects away from even having that potential. Right now, I can see them becoming a fringe team in the near future, but Benning needs to start making some really nice draft picks/trades/signings, real quick, if it's ever going to get better than that. This is not a team destined for greatness. Not yet, anyway.

Boeser - Pettersson - Horvat
Hoglander - Miller - ?
bleh - bleh - bleh
bleh bleh bleh bleh

Hughes - decrepit OEL
decrepit Myers - broken down hamonic
bleh bleh

does not a contender make. He's really banking on some reclamation projects.

To be fair, there are only one or two idiots who think Pettersson is a top 5 C and that Hughes is going to win the Norris next year.

But I agree, there isn’t much in the prospect pool to get excited about.

Podkolzin is okay. Not elite or anything, but not bad. Hoglander looks like he'll be a serviceable top 6 winger. It's a middle prospect pool.

I'd say it's a young team, but quite frankly, i'ts not really THAT young. Horvat is 26, Boeser is 24, even Pettersson is almost 23. That's not really a collection of super young kids that you can expect tonnes of growth from, they're coming into their prime. WYSIWYG out of them, for the most part.

LIke I say, there better be some major acquisitions, and not of the broken down reclaimation type, or that team doesn't project into anything better than a fringe playoff team. Or maybe some draft surprise jackpots, which I don't really see there.
