To be fair, I usually don't assume men's rooms are single occupancy. Now if there was a sign saying so, (frank) those guys (but not literally, unless you're into that, but then why lock the freaking door?!)

These kinds of places have a fairly simple rule. If the door is open nobody is in. If it's closed there's someone in there. Knock if you are not sure or if you're impatient. No clue why anyone would just try to open the door first.

The beer made me slow witted otherwise I would have said something funny when they tried to get in. Frankly I'm disappointed in myself.

I was recently at a pub with maybe 20-30 people in it and only one washroom. I took one piss and was in there for maybe 1-2 minutes max and two people tried opening the door before I got out. Yeah, they didn't even knock.
