Yeah. Two brothers started/own the brewery. Their last name is Trogner. They combined their last name with the Flemmish word for pub, Kroeg.

As anyone would do.

It has been a while since I've done a beer review. I don't drink as much but have been exclusively IPAs or session IPAs when I do drink beer. Lately, I've been intrigued to try Troeg's new Field Study IPA. Troegs is a hop skip and a jump away from me and I've never been disappointed with one of their beers.

As the picture states, you get a nice citrusy grapefruit taste up front. That's followed by a crisp pine hop taste and the end is mellowed out with a melon/sweeter taste. A nice balanced beer and perfect for summer.

well (frank) yeah.

really dig it. crisp AF. more hopped up than me in 1994 and it's got more fruits than a bag of skittles but not sweet and syrupy or anything stupid.

wow. what a week!

this might be the first time hockeybuzz has been advantageous to me.

i have noticed that i grade harder than he does. not better or worse, just different. it's like umpires. we have our own strike zones.

i actually wanted to just make it 9.2 for solidarity's sake. but he knows how solid i am (loaded with code or coated with load? you decide.).

we're gonna have to talk about this.

first of all, i love the colors of the can. a million years ago i saw a green/orange pair of pumas in a store on south street (when south street was cool *flips hair dismissively*) and i figured i'd see them again someday so i didn't buy them. long story short, i'm at least half dead now and i've never seen those sneakers anywhere else ever and i think about them almost every day.

but i digress.

about this beer, it's complicated.

first of all, it's a fruit-added beer. i thought it was just one of those beers where they're all like "these hops taste like grapefruit and mango!", not a beer with stuff added, which i don't normally go for.

i guess it helps that they printed a long mea culpa on each can, admitting to their weird mistake and trying to lessen the blow by telling us that it's real fruit and not some syrupy artificial additive.

anyway, it pours bright, opaque lemon yellow with a snow white lumpy head. it looks like it has tons of little bits of stuff in it but you don't feel it in the mouthfeel* at all.

it's the sweetest smelling beer i've encountered since bell's two hearted ale. i almost expect to see "smuckers" on the label.

now it's better than some cloying syrupy orange beer. i don't want anyone to think i'm taking points off for that. so don't get me wrong, it turns out it's a real beer. they definitely added fruit correctly if you're gonna add fruit. but there's something overly foamy about this beer. maybe it's just because i just drank the super-awesome-in-every-way troeg's field study, but this just overwhelms the mouth with foam by comparison. it's not as clean an experience and it's definitely not as crisp (although, tbf, few beers are).

it's fine. if i'm at a party and someone offers me one i will happily accept but i probably won't buy this again unless i'm having someone over that i think would particularly enjoy it or something.

okay. i'm finishing up with one more of the troeg's and it really is just superior in every way. i probably would have liked the stone one more if i didn't drink it directly after this.

where drinking the stone one is good in a "skinny jeans, apple watch" kind of way, this is good in a "i'm a logger guy by day who rides a harley davidson all night while listening to rockin in the free world on loop" kind of way. this one is just realer. both fantabulous in some kind of way but this one is just more real, if that makes sense to you.
