I'd put Ontario quite a bit ahead of BC personally.

Probably just a selection issue, we tend to get more BC brews here in Sask than we do Ontario. Honestly can't think of what I even see regularly out here from ON other than Muskoka's Mad Tom and Flying Monkeys

Great Lakes and Bellwoods are probably the top 2 breweries in Ontario and I don't think they really make it out of the province. A lot of their beers don't even make it out of the city I don't think.

I've had beers from most of the top BC breweries. Driftwood, Howe Sound, Central City, Tree Brewing, Parralel 49, etc. They're good but I'd put them on par with Flying Monkeys and Nicklebrook which is a step below our best here.

First post here. I was sent here my Davies (Corgi girl) after we had a conversation about beer in the Flyers thread.

Im really into German beers and I wanted to ask you guys if any of you have had a Köstritzer Schwarzbier before? Its one of my favorites. It has a nice malty flavor and while being an extremely dark beer is not heavy. It has a mild but nice flavor.

Also I'll be going to Scotland in a few months and I was wondering if any of you know some good beers I should try there?[/img]

I've never had that but it looks pretty damn delicious.

In Scotland I'd look out for anything from Traquair, BrewDog, or Harviestoun. Everything I've had from them has been solid. I would say Innis & Gunn too but I think you can get basically everything from them anywhere in the world so it'd not that big of a deal.

^^ three beers from the breweries I mentioned.

YES. Caledonian 80 is legit one of my favorite beers in the world. It's nothing fancy, just a great, traditional Scots Ale that people from the UK actually drink: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/188/602/

I think I have actually heard of Caledonian. I think a while back my friend had some and was raving about it. Never got around to trying it. I like that its nothing fancy though, some of these crazy microbrews just dont do it for me all the time. A simple Beer is always great.

There was a pub in Manchester called The Lass O' Gowrie right near MMU when I spent a semester there. They had several fine beers on tap but the 80 Schilling was my #1. The place was a Mancunian "cheese pub", in that you would go in, get a pint and a board of hard bread and a couple wedges of cheese.

Where you headed in Scotland?

It is pretty good. I used to buy it fairly often since it was tasty and cheap but now it's pretty scarce around here. Only a few stores in Toronto have it stocked regularly.

Really great dubbel. At least as good as the Dominus Vobiscum Double.

Now I feel bad for "wasting" this on a Flyers-Rangers game on a Wednesday night.

Pepe Nero is a different style of beer. It's some kind of Frankenstein creation that is alright but not amazing. It's a dark rye saison with too much of a metallic aftertaste for me to truly love it. In my opinion DV Dubbel is miles better. Pere Jacques on the other hand is really really similar.

Man I'm way too snobby sometimes. I'll shut up.

Sorry, searched-copied-pasted too fast, I really was referring to the Père Jacques (Had the Pepe Nero last weekend - it's indeed not that great).

Oh well. You're not being snob - it's indeed not the same thing at all
