i picked up a 4 pack of the founders breakfast stout.

pretty sure we've all had it before and loved the (frank) out of it.

i will report back later as if none of us have ever tasted it before.

i stopped by my pub on the way back from the post office and am getting accidentally drunk on free samples of a new brooklyn rye and the new jagermeister from the reps who are here. whoopsie.

also, i am looking for the scotch drinkers.

i've never had chivas regal before, or if i have i don't remember it. i know people talk about it a lot but i never really listened to hear what they were saying about it.

anyway, last night my brother asked me to pick something at the liquor store to be my gift for christmas. i wanted to pick something between 30-45 bucks so it didn't kill his wallet. i chose a chivas regal gift pack because i really liked the little glasses. did i make a mistake? is it going to be poop?

The 12 is a pretty popular whiskey. Its a blend, malt whiskey mixed with other grains, like rye, so may not come across as smooth but for the price its a great whiskey.

np, if you find it harsh have it on the rocks and let it sit for a few mins, will mellow it out.

If you are going to add ice to your scotch make sure you buy the cheapest stuff available for the next time. Kills the flavour so you might as well.

I recommend just adding a splash of water, no ice.

if you have bitter or stinky cubes don't use em

People say to use distilled water. Most of the time I just use tap water but our water is pretty good here. Water tastes like nothing even from the tap, I can't see why it'd matter really.

a lot of places have nasty tap water therefore nasty cubes. i could see that being a reason people get fired up about it. nyc surprisingly has great water from upstate.

That's true. If there's any kind of odor or taste to your water at all that'd probably ruin a good Scotch. The water in a town I once lived in would smell like lake water after it rained. That must not have been good for us.

I disagree, like music its a subjective thing. Most scotches are blends, even the singles. The only ones that aren't are the single barrels, adding a temperature change, ice, and water can mellow out the harsher flavours. But thats the wya I look at it.

well i think our point is don't use nasty tap water/cubes if you want to dilute. whether it's cheapie stuff or not, use clean and clear water/cubes instead of lakefront flavor.

Adding ice mutes all the flavours. Just like with beer becoming more flavourful as it warms, scotch opens up a lot as it warms. Personally if I like a scotch I don't really find any of the flavours "harsh", there's just an alcohol burn that makes it hard to pick out all the other flavours. That's what the water is for, it tames that.

With scotch you pay a lot of money for subtle flavours sometimes, especially with the more expensive single malts. To then mute those flavours with ice seems pointless to me, that's all. Drink it however you like.

I'll stick to being a snob personally.
