I was going to say that I'm very jealous, but a friend just told me that the Cask Days organization is bringing about 20 casks to Beau's Oktoberfest

Aventinus is miles better than Vitus to me. Vitus just tastes like a slightly better standard Weihenstephaner hefe.

to me the aventinus is just a different beast altogether
the bad batch tbat got sent to the US last soured me on them

i cannot even describe how wonderful the place i'm in at odense is right now

I'm glad I didn't have any of the bad batch. Vitus is exceptional but pretty tame for the style I think. There are a bunch of beers in that style that I'd take over it.

I like Aventinus, Ayinger's weizenbock, Hacker Pchorr's weizenbock, Les Trois Mousquetaires weizenbock, Erdinger Pikantus, BDT DumDuminator, Schneider Hopfenweisse, and Schneider Nelson Sauvin more. That doesn't stop Vitus from being world class though.

that bartender sounds awesome

Yeah, agreed. The Vitus is great, but it's closer to a stronger Blanche de Chambly than to an Aventinus. Not that it's a bad thing, though.

Had a DumDuminator aged in a Pinot noir barrel a couple of weeks ago. Was exceptionnal.

LTM just released their 2013 Baltic Porter Special Edition (aged in bourbon and brandy barrels). According to the brewer, it's the best one yet. I'll hunt it restlessly.

Wish I could try that DumDuminator. We are getting the 2013 Baltic Porter here this winter but I don't think it's a special edition version or anything. I can't imagine it getting better lol.

it's pumpkin beer. it was okay. i wouldn't have it again. at least the spices only came in at the end. but (frank) pumpkin beer at this point, you know?

also, i was expecting more from a beer that clearly has an imitation green goblin on its label.

also, that is my brother with the negro hand gesture.

I tried every pumpkin beer I could find last year and it was one of them. It smelled like Toronto during the summer garbage strike a few years back and the taste kind of followed. If I had tried it in a blind tasting I'd never have guessed it was a pumpkin beer.

It's good but a bit watery (I should say thin) for me. Better than most other Canadian pumpkin beers though.

The Mrs. brought me back a bottle of Aventinus from Edmonton a couple weeks back, I cracked it tonight and was disappointed. Whether it was high expectations or something off. Didn't get much if any of the typical hefe yeast aroma or flavour ... hardly any of those banana notes and kind of a sharp almost cidery/vinegary flavour (acetaldehyde?). There's a number on the back which I'm assuming is either bottling date or BBF date of 310113 so maybe it was just old.

No banana notes? There was clearly something wrong with this bottle/batch.

It gets better as it ages so it wasn't old. Might have been too fresh if anything.

You also have to make sure you get all the yeast into your glass or you miss out on a lot of the intended flavour.

You might already do this but the easiest way to do it is to leave a bit of beer in the bottle and swirl it around until all the yeast that is stuck on the bottom of the bottle mixes in with the beer. Once you do that just pour it in your glass with the rest of the beer.

Yep, do the old Hefe pour. Not sure what the problem was, definitely served it too cold to start, but even once it warmed up just tasted off. Not awful, just not right or even close to as expected. I'll have to find it again and give it another go.

i agree with you.

sadly, i seem to hate pumpkin beer so much this one actually was closer to the top of the list than the bottom of the list of the ones i have tried. they're all so terrible. at least this one spent a lot of time just being wet before anything really happened.

i try to be festive and give poop a shot, but damn.
