what do you guys know about whiskey?

i don't want to get all nuts with it and spend a thousand bucks. but what kind should i get if i'm just going into a regular liquor store and choosing from the usual suspects?

You'll get a thousand answers. I say go for Bulleit Rye as its less sweet than most Bourbons to me. You should be able to find it for around $22

Affordable scotch means blends, but there are blends that are better than many single malts. If you want scotch (think: fire and wood, not fire and sweet) go with like a Famous Grouse. It's an affordable blend thats a nice every day sipper.

Typically though, scotch does not mix nearly as well as bourbon. Scotch and coke, for example, is pretty nasty.

i don't want to mix it. i just want to drink it.

i've been drinking the stuff people have at their bars when i visit buddies and stuff. i don't have any idea what the difference is yet between all these different varieties.

never heard of the ones you mentioned though. everyone has all the popular ones you hear about all the time, so that's all i've really had. i'm a n00b again.

Gotcha, so at a high level, there's bourbon, whiskey and scotch (whiskey). They go on a spectrum of sweet where bourbon (Jack Daneils, Southern Comfort, Bulleit, etc.) is the most, scotch tends to be the least. Bourbons are primarily sweeter because they use corn in the mash, where whiskey is only barley based. Corn has a hell of a lot more sugar in it than barley. This is why I don't like bourbons, I don't like sweet.

The only real difference between whiskey (see: Irish whiskey- Jameson's is the most famous example) and Scotch is scotch is made in Scotland, but they also tend to age it longer, which makes it even less sweet.

Alcohol is a "thirsty liquid" meaning in high concentrations it will suck water oR oil out of things, like oak barrels. Scotch that's been aged in charred barrels for 16 years has a lot of oak and peet in them, and those flavors start to predominate. I love scotch, specifically the smokiest peetiest ones I can find. But they're an acquired taste and tend to get pretty expensive, so I wouldn't recommend you start there.

Ah, in that case stick with the scotch. Scotchy scotch scotch.

Inexpensive and still pretty good: The Famous Grouse.

i just found a better liquor store right down the street that had a bigger selection. i was on my way to a party saturday and had to get some wine. i have a canal's liquor store right on my corner, but always noticed another canal's sign like ridiculously close, not even 2 miles away on the same street. so i checked that one out and they have a full length aisle of what i call "the interesting beer". i was pretty excited.

i will look for this golden carlos you speak of (yes i wrote it down, and no i didn't spell it golden carlos)
