Cascadian Dark Ale from Flying Monkeys, in Toronto. Pretty much a porter with a poopload of Cascade hops. It's (frank)ing awesome.

Diff between that and a black IPA?

All black IPAs I've tried so far (mostly local SF brewers) have been straight up awesome.

Yeah, it's a black IPA. That was pretty lame of me

The Black Jesus at the St. Bock in Montreal (on tap only) is the best I've had.

for some reason, the photos i'm trying to post of the beer i'm drinking aren't showing up in the post.

soooo i'm enjoying a Flying Dog Raging B!tch Belgian India Pale Ale. tastes quite hoppy for being rated at 60 IBU. 8.3% ABV, but not noticeable at all.

the highest i've seen is Hoppin Frog Brewing's "Mean Manalishi Double IPA" and that's rated at 168 IBU. from what i remember, your tongue basically can't decifer anything over like 120 IBU and your tastebuds become almost useless. i may be incorrect on that though.

so if it's too low it's no good and if it's too high it's no good?

like, you just have to find the range you enjoy?

or is it not that simple?

basically.

take Bud Light, that's probably like a 4-8 IBU beer, but bitterness doesn't ultimately determine how good a beer is unless it's supposed to be bitter.

if you go on ratebeer.com they should show alot of the misc. info that commercials leave out to pontificate about "superior drinkability"

Super Collider frmo Flying Monkeys is supposedly 160 IBUs. I've had it. It didn't taste more bitter than a standard IIPA to me lol.

beeradvocate is dece if you find a style you like and want to try more. they organize everything rather easily for you. i don't always follow what they say either.

ty.

i try not to put too much stock in anything anyone says on the internet (except eklund, he's usually bang-on about things) but it helps if there are enough reviews that you can sort of get an idea what the beer is going to be about.
