Right. He's not good defensively. Neither is Trocheck. Trochek has the edge in faceoffs. Chytil takes less dumb penalties. Give and take for both.
- tomburton99

The dumb penalties that Trocheck takes I cant give him a pass on, but I also hold GG responsible for not stepping in and intervening.

But Trocheck was brought in to play against other teams top lines, so in that the numbers wont be great. Especially when most of the time at EV your linemates are not gonna play defense. Just think about it… Panarin, Chytil vs Panarin, Trocheck… whos more of a liability?

But that was Trocheck's reputation, and he was brought here to improve those 5 on 5 numbers. And he hasn't. Plus he's paid another 6 million dollars for 6 more years.

I think you have your idea of what Chytil is and you are focusing on specific things out of context or without paying mind to other things. We have Mika, Trocheck, Chytil as our top 3Cs. Mika is #1.

Chytil had lesser linemates, less PP time, less ice time overall than Trocheck and still managed to put up more goals and only 7 less points overall at even strength. That's offensively. Defensively, according to the charts (take them as you will) he was by all accounts a bit better than Trocheck. The only things Trocheck has going for him that Chytil does not is FO%, which is a skill, and PP time, which is coach's choice. Chytil absolutely needs to get his chance to lock down top6 minutes, plain and simple. The only real argument is FO%, which has its merits but alone should not determine who is 2C vs 3C.

Bottom line, do we want more EV scoring? Chytil is better than Trocheck there. Is one more of a liability on defense than the other? Don't think there's a huge gap right now and Chytil is more likely to have room for improvement in every aspect than Trocheck

My sincere hope is that Chytl spent this summer working on draws. That's my biggest gripe with him. Forget having someone on his line to take draws for him, he can and should improve.

Faceoff as a larger issue, not that important. Situationally, obviously depends on the time.

And separate stats are kept by team if they are able to recover the puck even after a loss or draw. Plus, was the draw in offensive or defensive zone, and as said, time of game

Yep. Then they tried a retired linesman.
I have heard of multiple players spending a summer working on faceoffs and improving. Yes, those names include Crosby, Toews and Yzerman, but a learnable skill is a learnable skill. It just takes commitment and practice. This should not be an insurmountable hill for Filip.

Mike Peca is an actual assistant coach on the staff though, he's not some consultant brought in for a couple of weeks

I for one am very pleased with the assistants this team has added to Laviolette's staff, but the cynical will always remain cynical

Im just happy our players might actually get the much needed guidance and system dynamics theyve been needing for the last 5 years.

So why hate Chytil so much if he hasn’t been coached properly?

Because even with bad coaches good players still stand out. Good players dont just stop being good because of bad coaching.

Obviously theres room for improvement, I never said there wasnt. All Ive ever said is I havent seen, in the 5 years hes been here, significant improvement in the areas I specifically mention. Im not talking going from Chytil level defense to Bergeron, Im talking small improvements.

Chytil went from 8 goals and 14 assists in 2021-22 to 22 goals and 23 assists last season

I know you dont care about improvement in that area but some of us do
